Yes it seems to be the trouble.
When I Disable extension -
SAI DVD-RAM TuneUp™ Init
I don't have any lock-ups (at least not yet)
My version of the extension is 2.1.1
on the website they list a free upgrade to
2.1.2 they also have a version 3.0 ($50 upgrade)
I am going to try 2.1.2 and see what happens

after repeated visits to the Extension Mgr and many re-starts, I'm coming to the same conclusion...if the DVD-RAM Tune up init from SAI(2.1.1) is ON, and you try the import audio function above the regions list, ProTools WILL quit and the computer displays "type 2 error".
I was unable to download 2.1.2...got a message saying "could not find original product"...will probably buy the $50 version....

Yea I had the same problem with 2.1.2.
I've been emailing back and forth with
john @ software arch. trying to figure out the conflict. he was wondering what drives we have. Do you have a Panasonic drive?
here is his last email

Hi
Were they all using Panasonic DVD RAM drives? If you go to DVD RAM Tuneup
and point at the ID for the drive, at the bottom of the box it will way
model and revision.
The revision number is the firmware version. What does it say there?
Thank you
John

OK....possible good news....first of all, the 2.1.2 update on SAI's website is for DiskDrive Tune-up...no wonder it couldn't find "original product"...the only option is the 3.0 update for $50...I, too, have talked with John @ SAI, and he said they offered a 3 day money back guarantee, so I downloaded and installed it...it SEEMS to be working...I am unable to duplicate crashes that happened EVERY time I tried to "import audio" with the older extension enabled...there's a light at the end of this tunnel.....

Oh! DVD-RAM tune up..? What crap.. Totally destroyed a DVD-ram for me, had to send it to disk lab. Besides, it's so slow... on everything. Another thing about DVD-RAM. The different claims like "disc transfer rate, 1200 (or 1500, 2000) k/s" Yeah, right. I got my 1200 k/s drive. it's maxing out at 110 k/s write. not even read gets near those speeds... Talk about cheating liars.. LaCie and the lot. And they still lie about this! Even though it was discovered a year ago soon... Bastards. Sorry about that, just had to proclaim my hate
