Hola Jascha: with that laptop you can upgrade to Catalina fine, I would recommend Mojave though, and I got the same problem of the video engine not starting.

Check here

https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/ar...ails-to-launch

Problem: On macOS the Pro Tools Video Engine will not finish launching (gets stuck on "Waiting for Video Engine to launch" message).

Solution: Check to make sure your boot volume is formatted Case-Insensitive. Case-Sensitive boot volumes are not compatible with the Pro Tools Video Engine.

On my case, my HDD is Case Sensitive, so I need to wait until they support this feature in OSX.

Reinstall the OS, and don't use the case-sensitive option when formatting the drive, going into the Disk Utility before installing, will make the trick.

I've had the best luck with Catalina, and by an appreciable margin. It's quicker and smoother than previous OSs.

This is a tough subject because each person's configuration will vary, depending upon what hardware and software you're using, and the versions of that software. For some (like me), Catalina whipped some problematic issues into shape, so to speak.

And as mentioned, it's also largely helpful to install a new OS from scratch, if possible. I did this just yesterday on a different machine and the difference was night and day. The old machine had been upgraded with new OSs installed on top of the previous one. It was getting slow. After the fresh install it's like a brand new computer (even though that particular one is from 2012).
