Default Best way to run computer audio through 003?

I have one pair of good studio monitors coming out of my 003 and I'd love to have the sound output from my Mac also running through the 003 so I can have my computer audio coming through while Pro Tools is open.

What's the best way to run my Mac Pro through the 003? What kind of cable would I need? I'm pretty sure with my 001 there was an option where you could run an input through the interface even when the computer was off. Would be great if that was the same deal with the 003. Thanks guys.

Close all applications > System preferences > Sound > Select your interface. Should launch Digi Core. Open your application (choose your interface from the prefs of your daw, application ect.) (For things like itunes or quicktime movies it is ready to go)

No cables needed

I have a problem. The 003 doesnt show in the "sound out"-list!
I have tried to re-install Pro Tools and restart the computer several times but it just wont show.

Any ideas?

This is how I do it. You can also make an aux track in your session that has an input of 7+8. That way your audio will come through all the time without having to record arm the track.

Just to be clear...you don't necessarily want to use alt source to 7/8 switch, that is for recording your alt source via input 7/8.

Simply switching alt source to Mon will give you what you are lookin for if you connect your computer's audio out to the alt source input.

This connection allows you to hear system sounds and programs that don't use core audio on you monitor outs.

Seek was right about core audio--it will automatically give you the audio from many programs through the interface as long as protools isn't open.

To install it (sounds like it may not be) insert your PTLE disk and select to install only core audio.

The combination of plugging into alt source (same as from 001 days) and core audio will make sure you can run ANY computer audio thru the 003, core audio compatible or not!

True, but using the 7/8 switch will allow him to hear pro tools and the alt source at the same time without having to hit the switch vs only being able to hear one or the other with just the mon switch.

As long as Protools is open.
Personally I don't want to fire up PT to listen to Itunes, etc.
Just being practical...

I do as you suggest when I intend to record the Alt source or need to monitor it in a session, but in that case its not my Mac audio that is connected to it. The OP's question was in regards to computer audio.

Yeah, I hear. In my case though, during a session, people bring their beat cd's and sometimes don't know which number they need off the cd. So rather than dragging every file into pro tools or closing pro tools to listen to itunes/wmp, it's nice to just have the option to audition from the alt source simultaneously. Reaching over to hit the switch is not a big deal, but ever second counts!

Gotcha. If PT's open Itunes doesn't get to use core audio--then does it revert to the computer audio outs? Sounds like thats the case...

Still, simple is simple and getting core audio to work for the OP would be a good first step.
