Hello guys

I'm reading this post about chipset compatibility.
One client of mine has a stability problem with what seems to be a compatible chipset. He's experiencing reboots when PT is in use. I'm suspecting some bad install or configuration of the OS (XP pro SP2).The motherboard is an Asus P5LD2, which has socket 775 and Intel 945P chipset.
Any infos of the compatibility of this chipset with PT 6.x versions? Is it only suitable for PT7 use?

Thanx

L.G.
You may have already tried this but reboot problems with Protools 6.x are usually due to Windows XP SP2 and the needing to update the PACE drivers.

That was exactly one of my first thoughts. I remember back in my days with 6.4 that there were issues with SP2 and that Digidesign only qualified SP1 for PT use.
I'm trying to make sure the 954P chipset is compatible with PT 6.x so that I can tell my client whether to just have his system properly set up and configured, or to ditch that board and go for a compatible one.

Thanx

L.G.

It says self powered?

What about this one :

Thanks!
Self Powered means it draws power from the USB port and that is what you don't want. I haven't been following this solution but I didn't think a powered USB hub was a work-around for the chipset compatibility problem. The correct solution is to get a replacement motherboard with a compatible chipset. That may require changing some other items in the system as necessary to work with the replacement motherboard such as the processor due to different socket type, RAM depending on motherboard (DDR/SODIMM and Clock speed), video card depending on motherboard (PCI/AGP/PCI-Express), and even hard drive type (EIDE, SATA, etc.). So this is not small endeavour both time and cost wise. Seeing how people have struggled over incompatible chipset over the years, I do suggest making the change to a compatible chipset/motherboard over trying to make an incompatible shipset/motherboard work with Protoools. It is just too frustrating for most. Your time is worth money too.

The problem is that Digidesign only list fully tested compatible chipset and others may work but have not been tested. There are some that are clearly not compatible. Try the PACE update first and then see if that get's rid of the reboots or "Blue Screen Of Death" issue. If he hasn't built the system (and can return it) it may be wise to simply exchange it for a compatible chipset/motherboard now.

Absolutely, I’d try the PACE update. Just wouldn’t get my hopes up.
Digi saw the need to place a specific warning at the very top of the compatibility pages involving USB hardware. That doesn’t happen all the time.
Tech support must have seen numerous examples… as we did here.

Thanx for the suggestions.
I think I'll take a shot at trying to reinstall and reconfigure his system and see if I can get it to work. In case it won't work, what would you suggest as a tested and surely compatible board to be used with a PIV 3.2 GHz 775 Socket?

Thanx
