Default Getting Pops during recording/playback

I just got into computer recording have been using an mbox 2 mini with windows 7 home premium 64 bit on pro tools 8.05. I am recording to a usb external seagate 750gb goflex drive. I just now joined the forum and read the rule about no external usb drives. However, prior to this week I could record and was getting no pops. This week everything has changed. I now hear pops and clicks in the audio when recording and even playing back old sessions where previously there wasn't pops and clicks. I recently invested in a nice microphone only to discover that I can't have more than one track with one plugin before I get a 6035 underflow buffer error. I did a system usage check and i was using less than 20% CPU rtas. I have tried all kinds of different buffer settings, changing the startup so only pro tools was selected, changing the setting to remove windows aero when pro tools is playing. Is there anything else I can do to avoid getting pops and clicks and dae buffer errors every 40 seconds? Also my computer has no firewire port or express port. Its a 2011 Sony Vaio VPECH with an i3-2310m [email protected]. Any help would be much appreciated!

Windows 7 does support recording to USB2 drives(and NOT firewire drives), so let's look at some other details. Is the USB drive a 7200 rpm drive? That's really important. Next, how is it formatted? Right-click on MyComputer, select Manage, then Disk Management.(with that drive connected) and see what it says in the left-most box. If it says BASIC and NTFS, that's good. If it says something else, what does it say? FAT32 drive support is pretty much gone with the newest OS versions. If this isn't raising any flags, click on the link above that says "Help us Help you" and read up on how to post a Sandra report. That report may turn up a hardware issue(in case you didn't know, Pro Tools is very finicky about computer hardware).

AFAIK Segate go-flex are 2.5" 5400 RPM drives = too slow for audio recording. Even if it has worked in the past, fragmentation or a large amount of audio in a session may cause it to deliver audio too slow for it to playback properly.

Buffer errors that happen as a result of plug ins indicate yet another possible performance related issue. Please follow albee's suggestion and post a Sandra report.
