Recommend AGP Video card
Hi all
I think my current PT rig video card is on its way out. Its a XFX Dual DVI AGP card (NVidia 6600 I think). Both my monitors shut off and then back on and the green power light flickers. Sometimes after an hour or so they stay on but its getting worse. So any working recommendations for a replacement? The AGP cards seem hard to find these days. I found this (XFX HD-465X-ZPF2 Radeon HD 4650) but not sure if its compatible with PT 8 HD. The card must be AGP, dual DVI and pref. at least 256MB installed memory. I did try searching the DUC and also tried to find the compatibility info on the digi...I mean Avid site but its all jacked up. Any help appreciated Thanks |

Re: Recommend AGP Video card
Yeah my concern on the 4650 is its an ATI chipset...no? I thought I remembered the ATI chipsets being problematic for PT8....
Just trying to extend the life on this computer...but I know eventually I will have to buy a new one to run HD on Thanks |

Re: Recommend AGP Video card
Actually, its the nVidia cards that are troublesome with PT(although I run a GeForce 7300LE on my system with sucess. Any ATI card should do well but avoid more than 512 mb or memory.

Re: Recommend AGP Video card
My NVidia has been ok. I upgraded from v6 to v8 and I do have some massive slowness on v8 where v6 was completely fine. Maybe thats due to the NVidia?
Why no more than 512M memory? This Radeon card has 1Gb.... Will that be a problem? Thanks! |

Re: Recommend AGP Video card
Anyone know why more than 512MB of memory on a video card would be an issue for PT?
Hey Fullsound! Can you tell me a little bit about your old AGP video card? Like the specs? How much to ship to Milwauke WI USA? Unless someone tells me 1GB of video card memory won't work with PT8, I might go with the Radeon card...maybe the new card will feel like something of an upgrade ;-) Gotta pull the trigger today though....I had to wait 2 hours for one of the monitors to stop blinking and the other one still hasn't stopped. Thanks! |

On card video memory. Basically anything over 256MB its going to pull some memory from the 3.25-3.5 Max memory that 32bit windows can "see". Smaller cards take less of a bite. Since PT is 32bit you need all the memory you can get.

Re: Recommend AGP Video card
Ahh Windows memory management...Ok, now I understand why too much memory on the video card is a bad thing. Thanks for that!
I found this card available so maybe I will shoot for that: SAPPHIRE 100258L Radeon HD 3650 512MB since it has half the memory of the XFX card. Hey again Fullsound. I will check back tonight to see if you had any luck but otherwise no worries. Tomorrow I will order the above if I don't hear from you. Thanks!! |
