Just dropping in my o.2, I think NS10s are highly over rated, its just that they were the standard when there wernt so many monitors on the market, I still see them in several studios but normally as a secondary pair. There are so many to choose from now, go into a decent outlet with decent listening rooms and compared to several new models and makes, the NS10s sound tired.

Just an opinion, not here to start any kind of contraversy, if they are anyones main monitor and favourite and they work for them, thats teriffic.

The Hr624s are decent as too are several of the Tannoy actives, Jbl are popping up into the serious sound market as too in Australia PMC are getting great reviews. A mate of mine has a set of EMES Violet HR actives, just amazing.

Look around.

From my experience with monitoring (like it matters)
I started with a pair of Event PS6's. I found that I
Was not getting accurate representation in the low end,
so I moved to a bigger speaker, and something a little
brighter as to hear more high mid range so I could avoid
harsh mixes. So I went with the KRK V8's. I like the KRK
V8's, but I notice they have the Smiley face EQ sound.

So after mixing on them for a while, I A/B'd them with
the old Event PS6's, and my Events had a more accurate mid
range. Mixing on the KRK'sI noticed, I had WAY TOO MUCH
GOING ON IN THE MIDS, because I was trying to compensate
for the fricken dip in the mid range that the krk's have.

Anyway, now I use my events yo get the mids right, and
the KRK to hear more of the harsh stuff, and some more low end,
and things are turning out rather well. I still would like a
sub, but for for the upper half of my mixes, i think I am getting
close.

I'm SURE my room needs work, but we are getting close.

Just felt like talking.

Im using 824's and ns-10's. My mixes come out just fine. you know there is another factor involved with mixing, "your ears"........... clean them!

We've been using Genelec 1031's and Event 20/20bas here for years. We've forgotten about NS10's and we still get good translation. 20/20's aren't accurate by any means, but what is? (OK, Dynaudio is). You do what you do with every speaker; sit in front of it and learn what it does.

I’ve been using Dynaudio BM6 for the last few years (since they came out), and I’m very happy with the way they translate my mixes.
In fact I chose them instead of the active version because I thought they were too bright, like most active monitors.
Anyway, with a good amp (mine is a Elektrokomaniet) they have a nice frequency balance. But as with any system, you must "learn" it.

There seem to be two popular practices regarding my original question: one is to counter-balance full, hyped speakers (top/bottom heavy) with something that exposes more of the midrange, or, get the DynAudios. I've posted on a couple of other forums, and its almost scary how many people are referring to DynAudios as their best-of choice for speakers. The DynAudios are a little out of the price range for now, but it is helpful all the same.

Thanks for all of the feedback, advice and even the occasional hygene reminders, it has been very useful.

The difference between a good monitor and a bad monitor is nothing more than opinion.
For every monitor someone likes some is out there who dislikes it.
Your best bet is to look at what's available in your price range and try some out in your enviroment.
If you are trying to get your best sound and your room is somewhat suspect then take care of that first since it will affect the sound of the various monitors you try.
Also the positioning of the monitors makes a difference as does your ears.
Fortunately you can learn any pair of monitor the difference will be more along the lines of ear fatique and things of that sort.
I know I didn't directly answer your question but my point is trust your ears.

I hear what your saying about not being able to hear the midrange with the 824 monitors. I use them in another studio to produce radio spots. I ended up getting the Mackie HR624's for my studio. I absolutely love them. My mixes translate just as I hear them.

Good luck.

I've heard many people say that the 624s have a lot of what the 824s have going for them, but that they seem to translate better (perhaps in smaller rooms?). Obviously there are so many variables and tastes invovled, but I've noticed this opionion has been voiced repeatedly.

Thanks for the feedback,

I have NS-10s and Dynaduio BM15s. They go great together because they compliment the other in what they are lacking. I'm no fan of 824s, and the only 624s I heard sounded like Crap because of the poor room they were demoed in. Find what really works best for your ears. We all hear differently.
