Default Distortion...

New to Pro Tools, Have version 10 on a PC. Problem is, I get distortion when playing files from inside Pro Tools, and when I import wav files into Pro Tools. Sometimes it pops in clear but then it goes back into distortion. Recording turns out fine but sometimes the distortion pops in and out when I play back or I could record with the distortion but it comes out clear. Does anybody have an idea, I really wnat to get started eith this software.

It sounds like your monitoring if it just distorting like overloading. That monitoring could be that you need to bring the master fader down. Make a new master fader track if you don't have one yet. You could add a limiter like Waves L2 and leave it at 0 db threshold and -0.3db for a level. Protools won't distort the channel faders but all of them together can easily distort the master fader.
If it's stuttering then it's your latency setting in the setup but you didn't supply any info on the type of interface(USB, PCI, Firewire) you have or what platform(pc or mac). USB usually makes a stuttering or zipper sound when the latency isn't right.
