Default Mono Or Stereo Aux?

Ok so I'm reading the FM, the whole thing, and I came across this in the Creating a submix section:"When routing mono signals with internal mix
busses, be sure to use mono busses rather than splitting stereo busses. Since Pro Tools keeps stereo busses phase aligned, splitting stereo busses can result in inaccurate delay compensation". My question is what do they mean by "splitting stereo buses"? For instance, I regularly send my mono tracks(drums, guitars, whatever) to a stereo aux usually setting the track output to (say)"Bus 1/2" and pan with the individual track faders. But sometimes I have set my send to either Bus1 or Bus 2 of Bus1/2 if I knew I just wanted that track on one side. If that is "splitting" the bus I have been undoubtedly causing compensation errors. If no one Knows the answer right off hand I will do some testing and figure it out but if anyone knows I am more than willing to skip the extra work....

Well...

I run most of my effects with stereo inputs. That way I can send L or R with the pan on the send and the reverb or delay changes accordingly. I never do discrete mono sends to those busses, but I have never had a problem with them.

You've noticed something? It seems not from your post.

I'm not sure it actually makes any difference in the way you're describing ...

BUT

Seeing as Delay Compensation can be a bit flaky and crap out even at the best of times, I would think it's probably better to err on the side of caution and use a panned stereo buss....

Even mono tracks have stereo outputs otherwise you wouldn't be able to use the panner. if you route mono tracks to mono auxes there's no way you can saparate the tracks in the stereo field...unless your goal is yo make mono mixes of course, or you decide to use two mono auxes, one for L another for R which is the same as using a stereo aux with the additional trouble of having to create a group and use twice as many bus processing.

I'm unshure how relevant this is to the issue but it happens that I do this:
Create a mono aux.
Insert a stereo plug on it, like a reverb.
(The aux now has mono input and stereo output.)
Feed it with mono sends. (They'll have no pan control.)

Guess I'll experiment and see if I can get phase errors with different routings. Just in case it does cause problems I've started putting a low impact mono to stereo like Ben mentioned. I just came across that blurb and went . I haven't had to mix much more that 30-40 track mixes so maybe I would never have noticed anyway, but I'm sure curious about it.

Just put up the mono/stereo plug-in and then make it inactive. No processing, no CPU hit, but the track remains stereo out.

Yeah I was just being lazy not having to mess with the panning
