Default 2 channel utility knife?

I know this is a very subjective question, and I'm sure those are the sorts of answers I'll receive BUT- I need to get good quality mic pres (2 channels) that would be sort of in the "utility knife" category. They will go through a RME converter into a PT LE setup. Uses will vary from kick/snare vox/ organ/acoustic guitar? For a variety of music types- funk/soul/rock/acoustic fingerstyle. In people's opinions would something like a Grace 101/ Earthworks (transparent) or more like a Vintech 1272 (colored) be better as good all around multi purpose pres? At this point I can't afford both, even though I know they suit different purposes.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Check out TL Audio. We have several of their PA-1 and PA-2 mic preamps and they are great. Two channels, valve circiutry, very quiet very clean, and supurb sound. We bought all of them used for between $350-500 each. For about double that we bought the dual valve mic preamp/compressor. Same preamp with a full function tube compressor.(The latter usable as an insert on it's own also.)
They both blow doors on ANYTHING in that price range.

I'm actually thinking about selling one of the PA-1 preamps, as I loved them so much I really bought too many. If you're interested e-mail. Check our website for recordings done with these mic pre's.

Good Luck

joshua, if you are refering to the studio in Rochester NH, yes I have done several projects there. Hank has a great facility, and it's always a pleasure to go there and work on that awesome Neve of his.

Hi, check out the Aphex 107 tubessence pre. It's a good low dollar pre that'll get you down the road. Pair it with a great mid-price mic like the Audio Technica 4050 and you're on your way.

I used this setup for a good while before getting my Red 1, and it really sounded good.

Good luck!
