Some interesting comments he posted:

"I have started my work on splitting up my Cubase code and C24 code so I can make a generic midi to c24 application. Not only Cubase owners should be able to use this of course ."

"Downloaded the reaper_extension_sdk and checked out the source code for the BabyHUI. I was able to create an embryo for a surface that maps to my C24 application . It shows the four first chars of the tracknames in the c24 ."

"Now I'm finished with the sysex specification. I have also named the application to 'Control24 DAWIER' "

"I implemented tcp networking between cubase and DAWier. Very good performance and no need for virtual midi drivers like MidiYoke. Almost everything is ready except for automation and some known bugs or 'issues'. "
How come you didn't include this post from the guy who was doing the development...

I'm sorry to say that my legal advisors do not recommend that I continue with a public release of the software. Allthough the reverse engineering part is not illegal nor the release of a software built to extend interoperability (layers did some research), Avid might probably sue anyway if they for some reason don't like the product or the idea that the Control24 should be used in another context than Protools. And that I can't afford... nor the money, time or the energy.

And I've go the feeling that Shan isn't going to appreciate your linking to this thread...here's what he had to say about the Control 24 back in 2009...

From my experience with it, (the Control 24 is) way over priced junk. I've brought up this same topic here a few years back. Best to offload it and move on in my opinion.

And...

(My Control 24) was used for 3 things. The monitoring system, the talk back, and a foot rest. Other than that, I didnt even use it. One prob after another with that overpriced Digidesign crap.

Shan...I don't think you even need a driver to do those things.

And...

I guess the next step is probably having some type of conversion app to convert this output data to MIDI or something that REAPER can understand and use. Good job! I ventured into this (Control 24 driver) a few years back but didn't get as far as you.

Gee...I thought he'd only been a part of this failing scheme for a few months...I never imagined he'd been trying to sell snake oil for four years...

If you guys haven't noticed by now, Bill is just a troll and clearly doesn't want these consoles to work. What I can't figure out is why is he spending so much time trying to fight everybody. I see his name on every forum about this topic. If you don't own one of these, why do you even care?

The link I posted shows that it's possible to develop a driver by a third-party.

The legal discussion is about the commercialization of the driver.

I don't know what would happen if someone uploads the code for free.

Is it legal to use a discontinued controller desk with a custom driver (Mackie HUI protocol for instance) and Logic or PT11 in a commercial studio?

Yeah if it gets out into the public domain no legal power is going to help anyone stop it, would be like trying to stop illegal MP3 sharing!
