Native RTAS Question?
Hi there
I done a search for this and did not get much info. It's probably a silly question to you guys but I'm new to Pro Tools and would appreciate a clarification. I'm shortly about to get Pro Tools 9 HD|Native and will use the software without the Native card to begin with - until I save for an HD I/O. I will use my RME MultifaceII for the time being. My System specs are in my signature. My question is this: If going Native|HD, does this mean that any plugins I use must be RTAS enabled? Or would this be only the case if I was TDM? Regards Stewart

Re: Native RTAS Question?
RTAS only. There are no DSP chips to run the TDM code on.

Re: Native RTAS Question?
The beauty is though. If you stand on a TDM system, and go to native, they switch to RTAS.
When you go back to TDM, theplugs that were TDM originally revert back to TDM. You dan't have to worry about changing them back. |

Re: Native RTAS Question?
Thanks Sunburst79
I wasn't sure I was understanding the whole RTAS thing. I was aware that RTAS was required for Pro Tools but for some reason I just assumed that it was TDM thing. So it's RTAS always! TDM and Native? Just needed to know as I have UAD2 and Guitar Rig4 and several others things which I may need to reinstall as I definitely recall not installing the RTAS element of my UAD software. Thanks Stewart

This has confused me a little. Aren't they RTAS before the switch to native? Stewart

Re: Native RTAS Question?
WhatI'm saying is that if you go from TDM to NAtive and back, TDM returns to TDM state.
IF from native to TDM, they will stay RTAS |

Re: Native RTAS Question?
Just to clarify, You cannot use TDM plugs with HD|Native, (as TDM). Any Native system (at least so far), will only use RTAS (or VST's that have been wrapped on a PC), in a protools environment. If you have a TDM ONLY plug you will not be able to use it with HD|N, (such as HEAT). If you have TDM/RTAS you can use them but they will default to RTAS.
In order to use TDM you must have a TDM system, ie: HD1, HD2, (Some of the 'live' desks???), etc... where there are processors dedicated to running the plugs/software and not processed on your computer processor.. Clear as mud?

Re: Native RTAS Question?
Try to clarify things.
Pro Tools LE = RTAS Pro Tools HD Native = RTAS Pro Tools HD = RTAS + TDM. All systems run AudioSuite and RTAS. Pro Tools HD adds dedicated audio DSP so you can run TDM plugs. The name Pro Tools HD Native is somewhat of a misnomer as it will not run any HD only (TDM) plugins or the hardware (DSP) mixer. Before the introduction of HD Native with 8.1 all "HD" versions of Pro Tools were DSP based and ran both RTAS and TDM plugs. In this case HD Native refers more to its capabilities and feature set rather than the mixer and audio processing architecture. Hopefully that clears things up. What Lexaudio is refering to is the fact that you can move a session from HD to HD Native or PT9 Native or PTLE pretty easily. Any HD plugs in the session will automatically convert from TDM to RTAS when you open the session. The only exception would be any TDM only plugs like HEAT, REVibe, IMPACT etc.

Re: Native RTAS Question?
"Protools HD" means that you get to use HD interfaces. It's just that now you can run them with or without dedicated DSP power, granted, it may be a little confusing to some.

HD Native was first released with Pro Tools HD 8.5. Shame on you SB.
