Default files automatically renamed -01 -02 when dragged to timeline

Help. This is something I've not seen before and can't track down in the manual. I want it to stop!

One of my students - when they drag a file from the clip list to a track on the edit window it gets a number added. So a file called 'bell' becomes 'bell-01' then another copy dragged in becomes 'bell-02' etc. so each copy gets its own, unique name. Nothing is overlapping and each is exactly the same length (the full wav file length). I've tried every clip related and view related preference I can find (apart from one, I'm guessing!). I can't replicate it on my own machine (same, latest PT version...). I'd be very grateful for pointers. Thanks.

What version of Pro Tools? Look in the Clip List, you'll probably see one file named correctly and then the one you're seeing on the Track. I had this happen in a previous version of Pro Tools and stopped using drag-and-drop. I'm on 2023.6, but haven't checked if it's still happening.

2023.9.0 (the student may be on Intro, I'm on Studio). And (they're not with me now) but yes, the original (in bold) and the files with suffixes (not bold) appeared in the list. I've used PT for around 30 years and not had this problem.

I may have tracked it down - if track is set to ticks, not samples, and an elastic time mode is checked, it renames every instance.

None of my tracks are set to ticks and I've never used elastic time mode, so that was not the issue for me. Hopefully it will be for your student.

Cool you got this. I was also going to suggest if the student is applying clip gain or effects that will generate another clip file name. And it's easy to apply that accidentally e.g. though Clip Gain keyboard shortcuts.

It's not the tick mode. It's the elastic time. Any time any file is processed, it gets the "-" treatment: time stretching, clip gain/line, editing, etc.
