Default Accel 3 PT 10.3.7 crashes

Hi. Been getting random crashes recently, despite trying all the usual fixes. This morning PT 'quits unexpectedly' at launch and I'm stuck.

The latest crash report points towards Waves, and I've contacted them, but I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Report text as follows (sorry - there's quite a lot of it!), and thanks in advance:

Hi,

Ah, Weston-super-mud i know it well.

Have you tried uninstall Waves and re-installing?

Also trash the waves prefs? user/library/prefs/Waves preferences. Before re-installing.

Any old waveshells in the plugins folder Library/App Support/Digidesign/plugins

Thanks Chris.

Waves got back to me with a similar suggestion - here's what they said:

Please go to: SysHD/Users/Current User/Library/Preferences/ and trash the folder named "Waves Preferences".
Now go to: SysHD/Users/Current User/Library/Caches/ and trash the folder named "Waves".
Launch Pro Tools and when Waves Preferences window pops-up, check only "Re-scan all plug-ins" and "Don't show me again".

It seems to have worked! One point of confusion though, the 're-scan all plugs' asked me to locate two Waves folders (version 8 and version 9) and there was only one in my system. I pointed it to the same folder each time.

Hope someone else finds this useful.

Hi,

Thats usually a sign that you have 2 waveshells in the plugins folder, so you might have waveshell 8 and waveshell 9 in the plugs folder.

They can live together if the appropiate plugins have been installed. (This is what i do as i run most as version 8 and the newer plugs as version 9) I have to install version 8 first then install just the separate ones i want from version 9. this is because version 9 broke scroll wheel support for me

Sad to report that the saga of random crashes is continuing, usually when starting or quitting PT or a PT session. The threads that are crashing or hanging now point to non-specific kernel issues (com.apple…), and I can't see a common denominator as yet.

So, it looks like I may have to reinstall PT and the OS, hence a supplementary question. I'm currently using PT HD 10.3.7, Accel 3 cards, on a Nehalem Mac Pro, quad core, 8G memory OS 10.6.8. Has anyone with a similar setup found upgrading the Mac OS (10.7 or 10.8) to be noticeably beneficial or otherwise, in terms of stability or performance? Any input much appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I started a similar thread in Protools 10 Discussion, PT HD 10.3.7 (also PCIe Accel 3) always crashes on quit. Other than that it runs perfectly.

Non-specific Kernel crashes make me think of bad RAM

Thanks Craig.

I've done extensive hardware checking with Tech Tool Pro, and nothing has ever come back as suspect.

However, a cautiously positive update: I found a reference on another website to making the recording drive 'permissions agnostic'. On 10.6.8 this is simply a check-box on the 'Get Info' dialogue, and, with fingers crossed and touching everything wooden in the vicinity, so far so good. A full 3 day session, recording, overdubbing and mixing four songs and no crashes.

I'm still interested in any experiences with Accel systems under 10.7 and 10.8 though, as I suspect the next plug-in purchase may well force the move to a newer OS.

I have not found a good RAM checker, the tester said it's good but Pro Toosl hates it

But Drive Permissions are a good place to start

Season's greetings to all.

UPDATE: since making the audio drive 'permissions agnostic' the crashes seem to have stopped. However, there has been one unfortunate and serious consequence. On opening sessions saved prior to the permissions change all is fine APART from ALL instances of the Novaltech Character plugin losing their adjusted settings and returning to factory default (i.e. effect 'off'). Both TDM and RTAS versions the same. This is pretty disastrous as it's a plug I use extensively, on almost everything to some degree. All other plugins appear to be unaffected.

So, any suggestions as to how to force PT to look for the individual settings?

Thanks in advance.
