Default Any way on PC to refresh 003 FireWire connection when unresponsive?

Win 10 Home version 1703
Pro Tools 12.8
003 console

Understanding that hot-swapping the cable will cause damage and therefore not an option, is there any software-based way on the PC, short of rebooting, or control sequence on the 003, to refresh the FireWire connection bewteen the 003 and PC when it gets lost and won't fully respond when a session is launched?

Troubleshoot what is causing this and fix it.

Most common cause of stuff like this is allowing the computer to sleep/suspend. You can't let the computer do this, which is why disabling power management is a part of standard computer optimization (have you done that). Or you need to power down the interface first.

If that is not it describe exactly what is happening, when exactly it "gets lost" and what exactly that means. 003 driver version? Sandra report? Firewire card. What else is on the Firewire bus?...

Indeed^^^ in 5 years of running my 003 on 3 different computers, it never "got lost". Swapping for a new FW cable would be step #1 for me as they can fail for no apparent reason at all(learned the hard way). Having said that, simply switching the 003 power off and back on should be a safe move

but power cycling the 003 will not address the computer "losing" the 003 because it slept... for that you need to reboot the computer.

Absolutely true and why sleep and hibernate need to be disabled on any Pro Tools machine

Finally getting back to this... will post Sandra and other specs shortly, but first wanted to ask about this:

...so with computer AND 003 on, you're sure it is safe to power cycle the 003? I had thought it wasn't; and have always adhered to the sequence of powering things up (and back down) described in manual...
thanks in advance...

Well, back in the heydays of 002 and 003, when installing PT LE(every version), the installation instructions were to start the software install with the interface NOT connected, then connect when the installer called for it. The only "safe" way to do that with 002 or 003 was to have the firewire cable connected, but the unit powered off. I probably did at least a dozen installs following that method without issue I can't think of any other way to do it

I hope you didn't "hot swap" the firewire cable? Never, ever do that. Make sure both the computer and 003 - or any other firewire device - are stone cold off. I've already paid for that educational lesson. One reason I run my RME UFX with USB rather than the also available firewire connection.

I also learned that one the "expensive" way $327 later, I worked that 003 for another year of no problems until I made a major upgrade. While I never intentionally "hot-patched" it, I likely bumped it as my path to the vocal booth went behind the desk
