Default .wav file is unreadable by Pro Tools.

Hi all,

I am not able to use Pro Tool as of yet. Hence I recorded a song using another application and saved the data into .wav format to ensure there is no loss in voice quality.

I now want to process my .wav file using Pro Tools 2018, but when I try to open the file, I get the error, FileName.wav is unreadable by Pro Tools

I believe some did try to guide me on this before, I am not sure.
Could someone please help me again on this?

Thanks a lot.

/Om

Hi

It is useful to also have a file converter in your arsenal for the occasion you need to convert a file. If you find that particular file not playing in any other media player then you know the file is corrupt and its not protools. Audacity is a free plugin that allows you to import and convert files. Now although it is already in your desired format However if you was to import and save it may fix the issue that protools is having with the file.

Good luck

I'm really shooting in the dark here, as you given little useful information, but is there a chance that there are "illegal" characters in the file name?

If not sure, give us -
The exact file name
The exact version of Pro Tools 2018
The name of the application you used to record the wav file
The specifics of the wav file, i.e. sample rate, bit depth
What OS created the wav file
What OS are you using to open PT

A wav file should be imported with no problem, use "convert" during import if sample rate doesn't match.

Years ago I remember that not all apps could read all forms of floating point audio. I have no idea if this causing your problem, but it is worth investigating if your other app is saving files in an unsupported WAV format.

What exact wave file from what exact source?

We all talk about wave files like they is one format. The audio data may not even be in PCM. I am not sure what Pro Tools does with all those oddball formats. Wav files are containers... what exactly is supposed to be in the container?

On my website there’s a free utility that verifies the structure of WAV files, you could try that to see if it gives you any insight into what’s wrong.

Hi all

Thanks for your replies but I am getting mixed information.

I am not expert in file formats.

I recorded my own song using audacity and saved the recording in .wav 16 bit file format.

I am not happy with EQ settings of audacity. So i now want to import my .wav file in Pro Tools.

When I try to import it gives the captioned error.

Question is, what should I do to be able to successfully import in Pro Tools session so that i can work on EQ, compression, reverb, Echo etc.

Hope to hear your precious guidance.

Thanks.

A 16 bit. wave should be no problem provided it's name contains no illegal characters. See if changing the name helps. Whenever I've dealt with audacity it's been a real train wreck.

From Audacity... so it should just be a garden variety PCM wav file.

Did you check it with the tool mentioned by Peter earlier?

Rename as Bob said if there is a funky filename.

Does it play in any other audio player?

If not, its corrupt and you need to start over.
