Default external drive question

ive been tracking on the powerbook internal drive and
have now added an external drive in hopes of better performance
and less interupt errors. (suggestions?)

i've Saved Session Copy to the External Drive.
How do I redirect PT to playback from the external drive?
How do i view which file location is being accessed?

is 512RAM actually better to run than 1 GB?

thanks for helping.__________________

If you do 'Save Session Copy In', and tell it to copy everything, the new session will reference the audio files in the new location, and new audio files will be placed in the new audio files folder. The location can be viewed in the Regions list.

1024M is better than 512M, but you may not notice any difference. You can use OS X Activity Monitor to see how much RAM is actually being used, overall, and on a per program basis.

If you're loading very large samples in something like Reason, Kontakt, etc., the additional RAM quickly becomes truly useful. There's no case where 512M is better than 1024M.

I agree with tele_player but what i did was simply copy my sessions and audio files to the new drive. Is there a problem with this method or is it just bad practice?

For me, I always try to avoid having sessions and audio files of the same name in two different places, it just seems a recipe for disaster. Your best bet might be to have two firewire drives, one for work and one for backup, keep the internal drive for OS and apps only. Retrospect is great for archiving, and a lite version comes with some firewire drives.
