Default Upgrading From PT 11 to Latest Pro Tools

My situation is:

I have purchased a new Mac Studio M2 Max. It was time to put my 2009 Mac Pro to rest. I will buy the latest upgrade version of PT from Sweetwater. The upgrade version is on sale until the end of June.

What I would like to do is purchase the upgrade now to take advantage of the sales discount. But I need to wait until around the first week of August to start using the new Mac with the new Pro Tools.

I have an Ilock dongle that has been working to authorize PT 11 in my old Mac Pro.

Can I download the new upgraded version of PT into the new Mac Studio without an Ilock dongle? Then I will wait until August to start using the new Mac.
Or will I need the Ilock dongle inserted into the new Mac in order to download the new PT version?

I need to keep using the old Mac Pro until August. Then I will move to the new Mac Studio. Can both PT license reside on the same old Ilock dongle I have been using? That way I could continue to use the old and new computers.

Thanks in advance for any info someone might have for this particular situation.🙂

You don’t need the iLok license on the iLok to download Pro Tools and install it. It will look for the license once it’s launched for the first time.

You can have both licenses on the same iLok but if you’re doing an upgrade license from Pro Tools 11 your 11 license will be surrendered and replaced with a new license.

From Sweetwater…

Q. Will I have to surrender my old license when I upgrade to the latest version of Pro Tools? Will I lose the old Pro Tools license too?
A. You will need to surrender your old licenses, but you will receive a new license bundle that contains Pro Tools 12 (when available), Pro Tools 11, and Pro Tools 10, so you can still use the older versions.

This is old info, therefore you should confirm with Sweetwater that you will still have a PT license that will work with PT 11. Then you’ll need to move that license to your iLok. You should also consider upgrading your iLok if it’s over 10 years old.

You will also most likely need to update any third party plugins you use on the old machine as well as the complete plug-in bundle for Pro Tools.

What you need to ask is price of "Reinstatement (of support and update) plan". Be aware trhat there is cheaper "Renewal plan" available, but it will not work for you as you do not have active support plan now.

So specifically state that you have PT11 and you want to get the latest version, and double-check they are selling you a reinstatement. That is a new word for upgrade.

After reinstatement, you have 12 months worth of updates and during that time you can renew the plan at lower cost. There is a 30-day grace period in case you forget, and Avid should also contact you (?) whether you would like to give them more money. But put that license renewal date onto your calendar for a reminder.

How it technically works is, the new license has hardcoded date until which new updates are authorised. Old versions up until that keep working, but if a new update drops one day after your license's unique date, you are unable to use that update, unless of course, you renew the plan and get a new date for your license.

Does the new reinstated license keep its "perpetuality"?
Meaning: Will it still work after the 12 months of use under the new support plan have expired?

Yes. It has a date built in and it opens all versions released on or before that date (not older than 12.6 though), but not newer. Included extra subscriptions will expire, but PT keeps working.
