Default Help finding DDR2 4GB sticks!

Hey All!

I am making the move from XP to WIN7 and as a result I want to upgrade my RAM. My motherboard is the ASUS P5Q and it can accommodate 16GB of RAM. Fantastic! I run many VI's for my composing rig and reed the extra memory.

My problem is that I can not find 4GB sticks of DDR2 RAM anywhere on the net or in Calgary right now. There are plenty of 2x2GB packages available - but I need 4x4GB. I would love to find a dealer in Canada to avoid taxes but if it needs to come from the States then so be it.

Anyone have any brilliant ideas?

Cheers,
Andrew

Why dont you try 8GB first. It should be plenty. PT will only access up to 4GB in a 64 bit OS, and only 2.7 in a 32 bit OS with the 3GB switch.

IMHO i would not invest that much money in DDR2. Save the remaining money for a new i7 build and DDR3.

Be sure to read the QVL for the P5Q so you get approved ram.

Looks to me like this is for his composing rig running vi's, so more memory (16Gb)would definitely help. His signature shows a macbook, which is what I'm assuming he's running PT on

It's interesting to watch RAM prices. When a new type is introduced, the price is high. About a year later, it dips way down, and stays there until a new one comes out. Then as the new type becomes more mainstream, the old one's price goes up.

yeah I hate that. One day I checked newegg for some DDR2 ram and was ready to buy, but wanted to do more research, so the next day I was ready to purchase, the Ram was in my cart from the day before already......but the price rose about $40 over night!

Thanks everyone!

So let me explain my setup a bit (updated my signature as well...)

MASTER
- XP sp3
- Protools 8.0.1cs2
- Asus P5Q | Q8200 with 4GB RAM

SLAVE
- Vista64 Ultimate
- Reaper (to host VI's)
- ASUS Maximus Formula | Q9550 with 8GB RAM

I am going switch Protools over to my Slave Machine so I have a bit more CPU power. Also, the P5Q can access up to 16GB of RAM, which I want to use exclusively for my sample libraries (Komplete7, PLAY Platinum, Omnisphere, etc).

Sometimes it can be so frustrating dealing with the speed of computer technology. I built these machines a few years ago and already the RAM is hard to find - and it's more expensive than the newest DDR3 stuff.

Thanks for those links...I'm thinking that those are my only options right now. Paying $330.00 for 16GB of DDR2 compared to around $220 for 16GB of DDR3!!!! Ouch.

My priority is getting more RAM available for VI's so...suck it up.

Benoni - you advised to read the QVL for the P5Q. My problem now is that none of those on the QVL are actually available anymore...

What is everyone's experience with straying from the QVL for their Motherboard? I've heard that the P5Q is generally quite tolerable.

I doubt you will have a problem with what ever you choose, but there is always a chance it wont work, or may require an update to the latest BIOS. I always stay with QVL ram for my PT systems. For systems I work on for people still using old Pentiums 3's and 4's just for web stuff, any ram will work.
