Default DV Quicktime look really bad in PT 7

Hi All,
DV Quicktime movies look really bad sense PT7. The image looks very fuzzy but deinterlaced. In PT6 DV movies look crisp and sharp but are interlaced. Seems like Digi tried to solve the jittery DV out firewire port on a mac in PT 7 by deinterlacing the frames. We do not need this feature on windows because we can not send DV out firewire the port. I can't really cut SFX in PT 7 because of the extremely poor QT movie problems.
Thanks,
Brandon

We didn't do anything with deinterlacing movies - most likely this is caused by a preference setting in Quicktime.

Launch Quicktime and go to Edit>Preferences>Quicktime Preferences. Click on the 'Advanced' tab and, in the Video section, select the option for 'Safe Mode (GDI Only)', then click Apply and quit. Your movie should now look better in Pro Tools.

Hi Digi,
I tried this. I'm still getting really bad looking DV. Big square pixals. The DV movie was mad in I movie on a mac. On Pt 6.9 it looks really crisp. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Brandon

What does the movie look like if you open it up in Quicktime directly?

I'm assuming you're opening the movie in Quicktime on the same machine as Pro Tools, yes?

If you import the movie into a new session, does it look any different? What is your movie priority set to and does changing it affect the movie at all?

If you download a movie from Quicktime.com and use that in your session, does it look any different?

Hi Digi,
DV video is the only one that looks any different in PT 7 as opposed to the quicktime application or pt6.9. I have a PC that boots to two different partitions. One that is PT7.1cs6 and one the is PT6.9.3cs4. Most of the movies I get are from studios running macs with canopus boxes. So, the dig the video with final cut or I movie. It looks good in all applications except PT 7. Really bad resolution. It actually make it really hard to impossible to cut fx to this movie because the BITC almost can't be read and I really can't see the details in the picture. Again, if I minimise PT and open the same movie with QT it looks fine.

Sorry to have left this out. In QT the source files look the same as in Pt 7, bad. What I have to do to get QT to play the files with good picture quality is to open them in QT and make a ref QT file. Once I do this it looks good in QT and in PT 6.9 but still the same bad pixelated movie in PT 7. Does that help?
Thanks for your time.
Brandon

Do you know what codec was used for these movies?

Rather than making a referenced movie, what happens if you make a self-contained movie and try that in Pro Tools?

Hi digi,
Thanks for all the help. I could make a self contained movie that's not in DV codec and I think it will look fine. For instance, motion j-pegA looks fine. Avid codec medium looks fine. The movies that I commonly get are DV movies digitized with a canopus advc-100 or 110. The problem with making a self contained movie is the render time. I really need to just open a project and start the mix or sound design session. It's probably really time or slower to reander out another QT. I'd reather not loose and hour a day rendering.
Let me know if you need anything else. Again, these movies look fine in PT 6.9 with the same codecs and version of QT installed, It's qt 7 by the way.
Peace,
Brandon

I think at this point, you should try reinstalling Quicktime. It seems there may be some kind of codec corruption happening - I can't really think of another good reason why this is happening and all our testing has not shown any issues like this.
