Default Melodyne or Autotune?

I used to use Autotune a few years back but don't have access to it anymore.

As I am running a mix system PT 6.4 on os10.3 I need to find something for tuning.

I got a copy of Melodyne duo with my Mbox that I never installed so today I thought I would see if it would run under 6.4 and it does. Great I thought.

But F*** me. What a performance getting this thing to work. Before you can even start working you have to fanny around making sure the session is at '0' then finding the audio region, then time stamping, then exporting. I gave up. Way too confusing.

At least with Autotune it just loads like a plugin.

So anyway, since Melodyne, has Autotune followed their lead with tuning methods? How does it compare these days and what are my options for PT 6.4?

Melodyne also has a plugin which I use all the time. I personally prefer it to autotune but if you need to do any top 40 you'll want autotune

The version I have only works via rewire. Are you saying they also do a plugin like Autotune?

Yes, and if you actually buy the full version of melodyne, they should give you both. At least that's what I got. It could have been because I qualified for a free update to "DNA" but it seems like they bundle it now. No matter what tuning software you get, it will have its own unique sound and I just happen to like the sound of melodyne better than autotune; try them both and see what you like.

Maybe I never learned AT correctly, but Melodyne (to me, and I work all types of projects) is smoother.

Now, as to the plug working in 6.4, I have no idea. I want to say it does. But that was 4+ years ago!

Let's say I don't agree with your statement. Can you back that up? Melodyne is smoother to me. Maybe I never learned AT correctly, but Melodyne (to me, and I work all types of projects) is smoother.

Can you remove notes in real time with melodyne. I have used the free plug with PT 8, but you can not in that version. I really think the 2 plugs a different beast. Melodyn IMO is much better at creating melody lines and auto tune's graphic feature is better at minute correction, and top 40, wel being able to remove or bypass notes in realtime with auto tune is that sound, but maybe melodyn can do this also?

Waves Tune.

Sounds better for most voices.

I own all 3.

I own all three as well. Tune has WAY too much latency for me, can't even have it open while tracking.

Almost everyday I come across a track that AT will track better than Melodyne and the reverse will be true the next day. 50/50, they both get used all the time.

In terms of sonics, AT sounds the best to me, while both Tune and Melodyne seem to mess with the highend EVER SO SLIGHTLY.

I typically print back from Melodyne to a duplicated track and then mute lines that don't need tuning (haha). And I agree with Drew - it does muck up the top just a bit. I tried Waves Tune. It seemed too automatic for me. Maybe I didn't play with it long enough. I used AT yesterday to completely break all the rules and record through an aux with AT to a set of four tracks for backs that a producer (who knows his sh*t ) asked for. I guess they do have different uses; mostly here AT is for outside engineers who expect to see it in the plugins folder.
