Default just updated to vista, now pro tools does not work

ive literally spent an entire day installing and uninstalling pro tools, being stuck on a 32 bit operating system is already annoying me, i'm pretty much about to sell my 002r and buy a motu + cubase or somthing else that is actually reliable.

here's a list of the methods ive tried and the results:

-install pt8 on a freshly installed vista:
pt installs, on first open, gets stuck on either dae or preferences, dont remember. tried running in compatibility mode, normal, user account control is turned off, same issue.

-complete uninstall, removall of folders, etc, then install of pt 7.4:
"pro tools has stopped working" error after install and first run. compatibility mode has no effect, user account control is off. here's probly the most interesting part of them all. i remember reading people getting 64bit vista working by installing and uninstalling 7.4, but keeping folders and preferences, then installing 8, so i tried that.

-uninstall of 7.4, keep folders/preferences/drivers, and install pt8:
works...sort of. the program acts like i have no ram and the processor from the stone age. with buffer times increased or using settings that previously worked in xp, the most i could get, was sound playing for a second maybe two, then it cuts off with a buffer overrun error.

-uninstalled 8, reinstalled 7.4, uninstalled and left folders/preferences/etc like the time before it:

works again, less of a buffer isssue this time, but a loud whining noise plays constantly on all tracks..and even shows visually on the volume faders.. wierdiest thing ive ever seen. tried opening different sessions, compatibility mode, turning on and off different hardware. same thing

-complete uninstall again. re-download of pt 8 (get the same files, so that was a waste), reinstall of pt 8, update pace drivers again just to be safe, uninstall internet explorer 8, delete preferences folders, etc:

pro tools installs and loads and hangs at "reading preferences"

-uninstall and reinstall exactly as above:

pro tools installs and first launch yeilds "pro tools has stopped working"

i'm completely baffled how a system that one day ago functioned perfectly fine with pro tools since 6.4 to pt8, now can't run any of them, and gives a different result at every install.

Which version of Vista? If it's 64-bit, it's not compatible. There are dozens of threads on this already.

Post a Sandra Report (located in the "Help Us Help You" thread) and so w can get a better idea of your specs.

I'm sorry, you probably mentioned this also but the thread is a bit long and I guess I have A.D.D. But did you say PT worked on this same puter with XP and 7.4? Do other PCU hogs run on the new setup? (like a video editing program?) This sounds like a problem I had while doing some upgrading I had to swap out a perfectly good ATI video card because it didn't play nice with Vista 32. When I posted about it a lot of people replyed that they switched from the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX to an ATI. (exactly the opposit of what I had to do) It may be worth a try?

Is there any chance you have installed I.E.8?

It may be worth a try to go back to SP1.
Even though most have had little or no issue with SP2, Digi says the following:
  • Although there are currently no known issues, Windows Vista SP2 is not yet officially qualified for use with Pro Tools systems. Should you choose to update to Vista SP2, be advised that is an unsupported configuration at this time.
  • If you choose to update to Windows Vista SP2, it is strongly recommended that you backup your system and create a restore point before updating to SP2, should you encounter any problems after installing the update.

what OS did you use prior to your latest install?? XP?

WDC WD10EACS-00D6B0 (1TB, SATA300, 3.5", 5400rpm, NCQ, 16MB Cache) : 932GB (C:) (D:) (E:) (F:) (G:) (H:) (I:) (J:) <=== this would be of concern to me. Vista brings a lotta bloat that XP didn't have. and this slow spinnin' drive 'could' be part of your problem.

Benoni, it amazes me how you seem to get different results on computer issues here than nearly everyone else.
In the past month alone I have reverted two clients systems back from Vista ultimate to XP Pro . The performance difference with XP installed is stark.
You live a charmed life. :)
