Default 002R SPDIF output distorted

The SPDIF output on my 002R is totally distorted. The level coming out is constantly over 0VU even though the channel output meters are much lower. If I pull down the master by about -48 db the level is still clips ocassion. Do I have a defective unit or is there a reported problem with the 002R SPDIF output.
I also have problems with the 1394 connection from time to time. The light will go out and a warning message says the hardware can't be detected. It happens too offten for my liking.

I've had a 001 for years and never had a single problem. This 002R has been a real pain, I'm tempted to hook my 001 back up. What's up ?
