just looked at the newest MacMall catalog and it's there, on p.73, the LaCie D2 does indeed use the Oxford Chipset.

how tall is this thing anyway? Can anyone chime in with approx. dimensions? thanks!

I just checked out MacMall, and it doesn't mention anything about the Oxford chipset.
I was looking at the 120gig model for $269, looks like a winner, 7200rpm, very high transfer rate, etc..

If I remember correctly, a few users were pleased to announce how quiet these L2 drives were, which is a great incentive to buy.

I've been using the D2 for about 8 weeks without any problems. It is quiet enough. My only grumble is that it's heavy.

Here's what we use. It's a totally silent running AC powered FW dock. Hot swappable, extremely economical and expandable to suite your needs.

Hope this is helpful.

Does anybody know anothing about the Buslink 40GB Firewire drives? I was told that they have the 911 chip, but I'd really rather hear your feedback.

Sorry, we changed web hsoting services this week and well to be frank, they suck (www.hostforweb.com). try again in a day ro so when we get this straight. The FW dock si realy a gret piece of gear, and I think you'll find it right up your alley.

Hope this is helpful.

ok, one more confirmation before the visa card takes on one of these drives today...

"it's quiet enough..."

as in, not too noticeable, or as in, compared to the last one I had, or compared to, say, the new MDD Macs fan noise, or compared to your average internal IDE drive....?

I remember on my now defunct PC, I had added a Maxtor 40gig IDE drive (72k rpm) and that thing was so loud that when I would turn off the pc at the end of the night, there was a high-pitch resonant wave still buzzing in my ear. very annoying and took the joy away from even aproaching my

So, I'm just concerned, if anything, hoping this new LaCie drive will be quieter than that...

thanks for any 'green lights' on this.

If noise is your main consideration, then do this:

Buy a decent, fanless firewire case, with the 911 chip, of course.

Put a barracuda V inside that case.

Results = quietest drive in the whole world. (That is a fact by the way)
