Question How is 30 fps video used today?

Curious as to what 30fps is used for...never used it once for audio post work. Is it used internationally or something? Certain films?

never, only online. It's used as an easier way to describe 29.97

As I understand it, 29.97 came about with color. So is 30 fps for black and white video?

30 FPS is used quite regularly in the field. Most location mixers use it.

Somewhat a thing of the past, but pilot tone tapes would be striped with 30 FPS code too (to facilitate the pull-down rate)

Yes.

30 fps is used for music. Engineers stripe 2" tape with 30fps SMPTE.

30 fps can also be useful for no video audio jobs.

30 DF was used on a few TV shows, Pee Wee's Playhouse being one of them.

30 NDF is the USA standard TC rate for sync sound field recording with film cameras running at 24 fps whose film will be transferred to video with a pull down (ie dropping the film speed to 23.98). The audio is slewed to match by making it play at 29.97. This was how nearly all TC Nagra 1/4" tape and TCDAT shoots were done, and it is still done with file-based recorders if the above conditions are in play.

I just booked a session today for a job that will finish at 30fps. Apparently, its for some kind museum installation, and they video playback/control device they use wants to see true 30fps. So there ya go.

Why not set your recorder for the same frame rate of the shoot? I'm scratching my head wondering why I would set my recorder for 30 NDF when my camera-guy is recording at 24 fps.

Pull-down.

30 to 29.97 matches the difference of the telecine x-fer. 0.1%
