Default VST Question

I am running SONAR X3 Producer as well as Pro Tools 10 and 11. I'm wondering if there is a way to migrate the VTS Plugin's from SONAR to Pro Tools. I understand ReWire makes this possible???

Hi Bob, and welcome.

Not sure exactly what your asking. Pro Tools does not directly support VST plugs.
So you have 2 options:
1) Use a 3rd party application to run the VSTs and Rewire the aplcation into Pro Tools. This is popular with VIs and using VEPro or Reaper, I don't know if Sonar works well
2) Use a Hosting plug-in tho host VSTs as a plug-in, this is what most do for EQs, Compressors, and reverbs. Blue Cast ans well as some others (I don't remember the other names right now) make these hosting plug-ins

Bob, As Craig said, you can't host any VST plugins directly in PT so you'll need wither a VST host, such as Blue Cat Audio's Patchwork (or their MB EQ), or VEPro, or you can use Reaper, which is another complete DAW, but you can load it into a PT instrument audio track and then run VST plugs of all sorts in it. You can then use Rewire to route the audio output from those tracks back to a PT AUX or Audio track.

Having said all that, I recall...from the past anyways...having trouble getting some DAW specific VST plugs to run that way. I tried it a long time ago with some VST plugs I had from Cubase and for whatever reason they just wouldn't run for me. But, that was a long, long time ago, so maybe they will now.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can use Reaper to run 32bit VSTs in PT 11. Reaper sets up a bridge to handle that. Works great!

If it helps, here's a video I did explaining how to set up Reaper to host VSTs in PT. You could try it this way and see if it works with your Sonar VSTs.

You've run into the problem others have run into - even though a developer might use a plugin standard like vst they might lock that plugin to their software and not allow outside use. Sonar has been good (or bad depending on your outlook) at that for years. Or some developers like Sony that use third party plugins like from Izotope lock those plugins to use in a specific Sony product only and nowheres else. Sony did that with the Mastering Effects bundle of plugins they license from Izotope for use in Sound Forge and they're only available for use in SF and not even Vegas (another Sony product).
