Default Mac Pro early 2008 with PT12

Hello guys, Iam new here, i searched the forum and didn't find thread about this.

I have Mac Pro 3,1 - early 2008 - 2,8Ghz - https://everymac.com/systems/apple/m...008-specs.html

with 250GB SSD, 3x 1TB HDD, 12Gb RAM, Radeon HD 2600 XT

I would like to know if I can run PT12 on this machine for dubbing and sound mixing movies.

Iam prepared to buy new graphic card because I will need more displays, but want to be sure that the PT12 will run on it.

Or maybe what kind of upgrade will you recommend me.

Thanks

I would say no. PT 11 was the last major version that ran stably on Mac Pro 3,1. Pro Tools 12 (early versions) was not stabile at all and the current macOS version needed to run current Pro Tools 12 (2018.3) will not install without a forced work around (and then you still can't use that trick to get to macOS 10.12 or 10.13; only 10.11 El Capitan)

On top of that, if you are trying to use video in your session, that's a complete nightmare of glitching with PT12 and Mac Pro 3,1.

What are you looking to buy used?

I was thinking that i will buy PT10 or PT11 which will be ok for my Mac, its not possible to buy in shops that I checked, so probably on e-bay.

My other option is to buy new Mac, which will be ok with PT12 but this kind of solution is way more expensive because i will need 4 displays.

I advise you to be very careful when purchasing PT through eBay. Many PT scams have been ran on eBay. Have you asked your dealer if you will receive an asset for older versions of PT (10/11/12) when either buying a perpetual PT 2018 license or a subscription?

But you don‘t propose someone to get a license of PT 2018 to use PT 10?

I do not know if someone who purchases PT 2018 today will get a 12/11/10 license with it. That is a question for an Avid dealer.

I’m not a dealer but I guess a new license will include 18/11/10 like mine has. But in my opinion it’s a little expensive to buy a PT 2018 license if you need PT 10 only.
