Default Someone Gave Me PCI Core - Upgrade from 9 to 9HD Possible?

Hi,

Someone gave me a used HD Core (PCI) without the software.

I have a license for PT 9 that I bought the day it came out.

I was wondering if I could use that license for 9HD with the card hooked up (the installer for HD is on the disc I downloaded from Avid).

If not, I'll have to buy a copy of 7 or 8 and upgrade it which will suck, but I thought I would check before I buy an interface.

Thanks!

PT9HD Mac doesn´t run on PCI hardware. You need PCI-e cards.

Even with an expansion chassis? I have a Magma chassis that is PCI and the PCIe host card.

Interesting and thanks!

The regular ver 9 will not work for HD. You would need ver 9HD. You can however upgrade to 9 HD as long as you have a core card and a version of PT HD on your ILok. You can get ver 7HD pretty cheap. Of course that's only if the card was not already used for an upgrade.

Thanks!

I understand that the regular v9 is not HD. However (IIRC) the HD installer was included on the disc image I downloaded from Avid following my PT9 purchase (from Sweetwater).

I just didn't know if my v9 iLok license would work with v9 and 9HD (providing I had a core card and interface).

Now I know that:

1- the HD PCI card will not work with 9HD in a Mac Pro even with expansion (which is odd, but whatever)

2- I would still need to purchase an upgrade to 9HD.

Thanks for all the help!

This is not correct, you can use PCI HD cards with the Magma 6 slot (PCIe to PCI-X chassis) PE6R4
with PT 9 HD and a Mac Pro

Interesting question on whether or not it would work. Yes the software is a universal installer, so no need to install anything differently. I believe the "HD installer" simply adds the core audio/asio drivers for HD hardware.

However when you start pt9 it looks at hardware attached and ilok licenses and decides which "version" to run. Without a HD license I doubt it would launch the HD version. Maybe regular pt9 with hd hardware? So none of the HD features would be available? Maybe. I don't know.

Thanks! That is what I assumed. I guess I'll try to find a version of the HD software that I can upgrade and go from there.

Be sure that the serial number has not already been used for an upgrade to PT9 before you spend to much.

AFAIK PCI support was not dropped in PT9HD - at least is still working in Windows but PowerPC support was dropped back in 8.0.x.

Hopefully the person giving you the card is also giving you a Transfer of Ownership? That way you could use the card in an upgrade later if Avid offered a program. If the cards serial was used in an upgrade you can find PT9 HD bundle assets out there on the web or here on the DUC in the Buy and Sell section.

Used PCI core prices are a compelling competitor to PT HD Native. I like the HD Native concept but if your on PC you could build and entire HD2 or HD3 system for the price of just the HD native card. HD Natives biggest competition may be its obsolete PCI ancestor.
