I can't imagine it's that much... pull up your session, open the system usage window, hold alt and insert a trim on the first slot of a track. Did the usage meter jump way up? did your computer grind to a fatal halt? there's your answer...

Indeed. I see no reason to use that plugin on every track(or almost any for that matter). The only time I ever use the trim plugin is if I want to temporarily change a track's level, without messing with the automation that already is written(and working). I will insert a trim plugin to set a new working level, then delete the plugin when I am done with whatever edit I needed to do. As for "optimizing" levels for subsequent plugins, if a track was recorded too soft, I use the AudioSuite GAIN plug to raise the level. If a track was recorded too hot(clipped) I re-record the track(digital clip trashes the sound and can't really be eliminated anyway). If you insert a compressor and it doesn't perform gain reduction, its not set correctly(unless of course, you want the "character" of a plugin without any action(some love the sound of an 1176 in the circuit, even without any GR). Whether this is valid "in the box" is subjective.

The cpu usage is so low, if you want, you can safely use trim on many-many channels. I think if your levels are so varying, than it is a good idea to make them "conformed".
