how much ram can protools really use
the reason i am asking is cause in the past few days i am getting allot of trouble from my setup , i suspect that during an installation of a 3rd HD Accel Card , i did something that caused an hardware failure with my Mac pro , it started out with the computer not recognizing All the RAM , then it crahsed the Digitest , then the HD card caused protools to fail Protools from loading up , Finnaly i took the computer to the guy that sold me the HD Card , and he gave me a different Hd Card that apparently works fine , and i after messing a bit with the Ram boards i got all 8 Giga's back....
but today while working with some Virtual instruments , protools crashed due to low memory , i opened system monitor to see what exactky is going on with the Ram , and i noticed that as soon as protools reaches with the OS and any other [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] that runes in the background to 4 giga's protools crashes....altough it has pleant of ram left i never try to run too many virtual instruments at once.... normally i print after recording a section (strings, rythem....etc...)and make inactive and hide ....but today i noticed that even after inactivating a VI , the computer does not purge the ram that was used so if i am opening a new VI the Ram used amount continue to grow until it reaches 4 giga and crashes... even when closing a session and opening a new one does not purge the Ram usage.... what is going on......is my computer on the verge of death ? is it normal that after using 4 gigas of ram with protools running - it will crash... could i have harmed the motherboard or Ram Boards and ruined my MAC? is it just normal and i have never really "abused" the Ram with protools ... and if that is so , how could i make the Ram count restart with out restarting the Computer Please any ideas? i am in the middle of 2 major productions......can't afford this delay in work Ariel

Re: how much ram can protools really use
if you look at OS X Activity monitor, you can see how much RAM is used for Pro Tools. When over 3Gb Pro Tools will crash and so for all other 32 bit apps outthere.
However you can do loads of things to having the RAM outside Pro Tools. In Kontakt activate Memory server, now ALL kontakt RAM will stay outside Pro Tools. In Pro Tools HD10 activate disc cache. Use Vienna Ensemble Pro to have VI´s outside Pro Tools.
