Default Re: Pro Tools HDX useless?!?!?! major RAM usage problems 32bit

Hi Stewart,

Sorry if I came across the wrong way. I appreciate the time you took to respond. I'm just trying to connect with others who are experiencing these problems. Unfortunately I wasn't the one who decided to make the jump to HDX but inherited this problem from a tech who is no longer working with us. I understand your argument but it's difficult to see how Avid is plugging their system as the most powerful, professional one in the world if we are running into these problems. I know the system will be great, however in it's current state it's anything but. I know this isn't Avid's fault but 3rd party companies that need to catch up. However most other DAWs have some plan for these natural limitations of 32bit programming, and I had hoped "Pro" tools would have as well.

Anyway, I was actually hoping for this thread to be about the problems and possible workarounds for those who are running into these problems (or others) and not a discussion about Avid's roadmap forward or a debate about wether or not HDX is ready for primetime. I'm sorry if I seemed short or dickish earlier.

Dustin,

I just did a ground up reinstall on 10.7.0 and combo updates to 10.7.3 then 10.7.4.. ProTools 10.3.3.

It seems to me that the whole computer, ProTools included, is much more responsive, than on 10.8.x.

I did the SUDO command for persistent 32Bit Kernel, because they way I see it, until the very last plugin that I use is ported to 64Bit, I'm basically risking stability if I go there.

I'm REALLY hoping this is going to be more stable than ML. Next week, I'm reprinting mixes (and alternates) for an entire album (for free) with client in attendance (do you think they trust me and ProTools right now?).

Does anybody know what AVID is officially putting forward as the approved configuration for HDX right now?

I'm running Waves 8 right now, and I'm loathe to WUP it to 9 since they've basically dumped us, but if somebody can conclusively say that Waves 8 is problematic, I would definitely update it.

I honestly can't believe there isn't a Sticky at the top of the forum telling users to avoid Mountain Lion at all costs.

Aaarrrggghhhh....

OK my HDX-2 rig *was* incredibly stable....
Mac 10.8.4
PT 10.3.9
no VI's

then i wanted to demo a waves plugin, so I had to install all the Waves nonsense..... yes I said NO TDM.... RTAS only...

now i'm getting "Pro Tools is critically low on memory" error, and crashes... for the first time ever that error message.

Yes I repaired permissions, yes I trashed all PT prefs,

help!?!?!?

yes I have a clone of my system drive, but this sucks!

anyone getting this, due to Waves shell, etc?

Hopefully you guys already know about this, but make sure you don't have any applications other than Pro Tools running when you are running Pro Tools...web browsers are particularly notorious for causing problems.

And don't forget that the programs you use to measure memory and CPU usage are also using memory and CPU resources...sometimes it doesn't take much to break the camel's back...

Just rockin'...what more is there?

With all that new and expensive hardware, why hamstring yourself with PT10? Just curious why no move to 11

Ouch. Yeah, I went thru this as well. Had to purchase a few things and find replacements for others. That part does stink Now that I have made the move, its been a huge boost in performance for me. Now running big sessions and working with Melodyne and EA at the 64 buffer(used to freeze in 10 at the 1024 buffer).

Do those plugins have 64 bit au or vst versions installed? If so you could use Blue Cat MB7-2 or Patchwork to run the au or vst version in PT11.

nope.

plus I'm not interested in a 'patch'

I have zero incentive to upgrade to PT 11, as I can never use faster than real time bounce (outboard hardware) and I don't use any VIs.

But if you stay with PT10 you're always going to be running into the ram limits of PT10. I don't see what running zero vi's has to do with going or not going to PT11.
