Default HD Native Advice....Any help is appreciated.

Hey guys. I'm wondering if getting an HD Native card with a blue face 192 interface, would be worth it? Right now I'm running PT 10HD(I'm the previous owner of an HD 3 accel system), with an Avid Mbox pro (Mbox Pro 3) interface. I only use the digital ins and outs of the unit, because I use a Mytek 96 for my a/d conversion and I use a Crane Song Advocet II for my outputs and d/a. I record mostly hip hop and RnB, and mostly track one channel at a time. So with this in mind, would
I truly benefit from an HD Native system?

FYI...even if I get an HD Native system with the Blue face 192, everything will still be ran digital like it is with the Mbox Pro right now. Thanks!

Things to consider:
Currently, 192's still work, all the way up to the newest 12.8.
Latency will(should) be a tad better with HDN/192 as compared to the Mbox.
Mbox tops out at 8 inputs, so you would boost that number.

***caution*** if you want to move up to the latest, starting with 12.5, you need a DIGILINK license on your iLok, which I believe is $299(without this asset, the 192 would NOT be recognized, OR you could go up to 12.4 without it.

If all you need are digital ins and outs, the 192 DIGITAL is a bargain. Having said that, if you make the move, I would go for the "standard" 192 with 8 analog IO and 8 digital IO(just my preference to have available analog IO in case you need extra headphone feeds, if you want some hardware inserts, or if you need some extra inputs for non-critical thinks(like talkback mics)

The other thing to be aware of is that some repair parts are no longer available for the 192 which was why official support was discontinued.

My approach has always been to use a digital only interface. Unless you want surround or need the more elaborate automation capability, Pro Tools vanilla 12.8 will give you everything 10 HD did and more. Clip gain has replaced almost all track automation in my life.

Thanks for your response. I'm usually one channel in when tracking. For this particular setup, I intend on staying at PT10 HD. So how much of a difference would going native help me?

Hey there. For this setup, I would probably stay at PT 10 HD. I just wanted to know if I would benefit any going Native HD. I have the Mytek and Crane Song to handle my ends and outs.

I don't think there would be much advantage using external converters.

If you are staying at PT10, I see no reason to change anything

About the ram!

In Protools10 HD Native is the Option Streamingpuffer or so, if its enabled Protools can use the full RAM and all session datas will be copyed after loading to the RAM. We have 16GB Ram and its configurated in the Setup Dialog, that PT occupy after start 12Gb and now you can work in the RAM and not from HDD! Or is this not accessible if you have a PT10 TDM System?
