Playback:

Change Default back to Onboard Sound before returning to Pro Tools.

Hold down "N" while you launch PT to open the Playback Engine.
When your session's open, go to Setup>Playback Engine, where you can change the H/W Buffer Size: set it as low as possible before Recording (e.g. 64 Samples) and change it to as high as possible for Playback, Editing and Mixing (e.g. 1024 Samples).

But right after I experimented and figured out that if I create a template (.ptxt) with my trusty window configurations, then choose "new from template" (of course choosing this master template) to create a new session, then everything shows up perfectly in place, exactly as expected.”

There’s a lot to learn (and I’m still learning daily!)

I initially got swamped – so I only learnt bits on a “need-to-know” basis - otherwise, it’s hard for me to see the wood for the trees. Overloading sure can kill the fun.

Just start recording your Pedal Steel ASAP – then use these links bit by bit, when you need to know more.

No need to spend anything yet:
Get your free 30-day trial of Avid Pro Tools 11 or Pro Tools HD 11
(Only one trial download allowed per iLok account)
http://connect.avid.com/Pro-Tools-Trial.html

You’ll need an iLok 2 or an iLok 3

proTools 12.3.1

this thread seemed applicable for my question, if not, i'll start a new thread.

purchased a Scarlett 2i2 gen 2 interface and it came with a bundle lic and one of the apps is ProTools 12.3.1.

i installed it but was only able to get the Avid App manager to install to a drive/dir of my choice. Never saw an option to install PT to a drive/dir so it installed on my OS C: drive which is where i don't want it.

is this normal or can one direct PT to install to a drive/dir of their choice?

Welcome to the Forum!

Programs like Pro Tools are normally installed to (C:) drive.

Sessions/Songs and Samples gobble up space. By comparison, Programs don’t.

Sessions/Songs are normally installed to an external drive.
Samples are normally installed to a 2nd external drive.

I use 2 internal drives and one external drive.

Unless you’ve got a huge internal 1TB SSD (C:) drive – 3 drives is “normal practice”.

I’ve read that the latest Avid App Manager is “behaving itself”.
“Normal practice” (for a long time) has been to avoid using App Manager - by downloading the Pro Tools Installer and its accompanying downloads from your Avid account instead.

ALL programs, not just PT, must be installed to the system drive - computer 101. You can move sample data to an external drive though.

thanks for your reply. i do have 3 drives, all ssd's. the OS/programs "c:" drive isn't full, just wanted to install PT somewhere else. it took up 651mb, not a big deal really, but the option would have been good.

i'm totally new to PT, so good to know i can save to my other drive which hosts such items. all other apps allow that function.

honestly, being new to PT, i actually was taken a bit back with this Avid App Manager. takes up a bit of memory for what it does, memory best used by other apps, imho. thanks for the tip about avoiding it (hope i can).

this ver is the "free" one with bundle when buying the Scarlett 2i2 gen2. i'll give it a try.

understood, i.e., for many apps, but not all.

i'm glad, band-n-a-box, reaper, steinberg, softube, etc., allowed me the option to install to drive of my choice. ;-)

thanks for your reply

Shameless plug, but you could check out all of my free videos. I have a "Learn Pro Tools Basic" series on my recording.guru website as well as quite a few other videos on more advanced features. Perhaps they will help. Good luck!

Hate to say it but you're fooling yourself when installing programs on anything other than your c: drive. What Steinberg and Softube programs are you talking about? Windows tends to get real snotty if you don't follow normal installation procedures.
