Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
Hi World,
for those who may be aware of the lag time (up to 3 seconds) between pressing play and/or stop when using a Quicktime file in a Protools session, does any have any knowledge of any software patches or fixes out there for this incredibly annoying issue with PT7.4.1/OSx10.5.1/Quicktime Pro7.4.1. It is in the PT7.4.1 read me that this is a known issue. I do a lot of post for commercial television here in Australia, and always digitise from the online master tape a DV-PAL quicktime movie (.mov) - then imported into Protools for my video reference. I've found that this has been the fastest way to work, until now. The issue is apparently an Apple/Quicktime problem, not a ProTools problem. When scrubbing or trimming audio regions within Protools, the vision scrubs in sync with no lag - the lag is only present when playing or stopping the whole mix. Opening the DVPAL movie directly with the Quicktime application and it plays immediately - no lag! So so annoying and frustrating. It's not a RAM issue with my system, as I have 8GB on a Dual Quad 2.8 Intel Mac. Also running a dedicated external drive for video (FW800) Hope someone can spread some light on the issue. Thanks. |

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
I don't see this with Meridian Avid files and a 2.3 GHZ G5, Playback starts instantly. Is it possible it is a DV issue? try transcoding a small section to MJPEG-a and see what happens.

I assume that if you remove the movie track it all plays instantly as well?

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
I am running PT7.4 cs2 with 10.5.1 on an i-mac 2.8g with 4gig of ram and most of the time it starts the session with DV or HDV picture instantly. I have had it slow up and a re-boot of the control surface a 002 cures this. I also think it may occur following use of the 002 with i-tunes via core audio and the re-set seems to clear this.

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
Hmmmm....
Okay, I've tried all these formats so far;- DVPAL, AVI, MPEG4, DV STREAM and QT Movie. A fix if any one is interested - all formats had the same 2 - 3 second lag, EXCEPT AVI, there is NO lag when using an AVI file (ie; .avi) Maybe Digidesign could test this and release a note to all who may have been experiencing the same issue. Thanks. I'm happy again. |

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
Hi Mixmaster Nate,
I would like to ask which "QuickTime Playback Priority" do you have selected into Setup > Preferencences > Operation > Video. I suggest to set it to normal and to have unchecked "High Quality QuickTime Image". Second, I would suggest to give a try to Motion JPEG-A Codec. But your problem is not related with a CODEC as I believe. José Luis Díaz |

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
All good. My 'movie playback priority' was set to normal and high quality was unchecked.
I also spoken to Digi support over the phone, it appears to be a communication issue between Quicktime and Protools, and Digidesign are aware of it. Hopefully a fix in the next release of QT/OSx - meanwhile, I'll stick with the AVI's... I'll attempt Motion JPEG-a as an experiment nevertheless. Thanks. |

I had this problem with PT7.2LE a couple of years ago. It was very slow working that way. I could not figure out what the problem was. Tried too many things to mention. I did a fresh system and PT install on a different partition of my drive and the video slow down was fixed. I went back to the other partition and the slowdown was there - same session, same PT version, same system version. I never did figure it out. Vince |

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
I just installed QT 7.4.1 on my PT 7.4 HD3 system.
Picture plays without delay. Mac Pro 8 core (2008), PT7.4HD, Mac OS 10.5.1. |

Re: Quicktime + Leopard 10.5.1 + ProTools 7.4.1
Hi there,
I just fixed the problem on my system by exporting the quicktime file in QT-Pro without sound. If you need the sound , import it from the original This seems to work ! |
