No my Project Mix is externally powered, that's not the problem. When you go into AMS and select "Rescan Midi" what happens?

The ProjectMix I/O should show up as a midi interface and not just as a device. Do you have any other midi interface besides the projectMix I/O attached?

Yes as a matter of fact I just turned it off and deleted it from my AMS configuration. As soon as I turned it back on, it showed up again. I'm afraid I'm running out of ideas.

What version firewire (not firmware) driver are you using? (1.8.2)

When you start-up the firewire interface "Applications\M-Audio Firewire" or "setup -> Hardware -> Launch Setup App" from within Pro Tools, go to the "about" panel, it should tell you what driver level you are at. Down the bottom centre of the firewire "about" tab you should see;

Panel; x
Driver; X
Build; X

sorry had to crash last night...

OK, everything seems right, same driver as me (the newest, which actually has some bugs in it, but that shouldn't be issue here).

What version of OSX are you running and how did it get there? In other words did it come installed and you haven't done any updates? Ran automatic updates? Combo updates? etc?

Do you have an external drive on your iMac?
Does your iMac have 2 fw400 ports or 1 fw400 and 1 fw800 port?
How is the iMac configured?

Do you have any other MIDI interface plugged in (usb or otherwise)?
If not can you borrow/rent get one, really have to figure out why it doesn't show-up in AMS and whether this is an Apple/AMS/FW problem.

You power up the PM/IO, (it eventually says "Running in Pro Tools Mode",
then you power up the iMac,
then you start Pro-Tools.

Does the LCD readout change after you start up Pro Tools?

Cool, Ok im running OS 10.4.8 and yes that is the version that came installed on the
Mac, No i haven't done any Auto/combo updates etc.

I have no external drive, at the moment but will be getting one soon. Although my friend has one and we plug that it all the time and record directly from PT into it no probs.
I have 2 firewire 400 ports.

Not exactly sure what you mean by configured? Do you mean like 2.16G dual Processors, 1 GB DDR Ram

Yes we have tried plugging in my MPC2500 via MIDI and that also did not show in AMS but as i am new to Mac's was not sure if it was something i had done wrong. I can plug it in via USB but that only serves as a purpose to drag and drop wav. files to the MPC.

No the display on PM I/O does not change it stays on "control surface in ProTools mode"

So it sounds like a problem with the Mac or AMS, maybe i should try an update?

Thanks for all your help sounds like were getting closer...

As OSX 10.4.9 is certified and supported by Digidesign, perhaps upgrading to it will insure the operating system is not the issue. Follow the instructions here and don't use the software update feature as it causes other problem. Use the combo update and only upgrade 10.4.9 not 10.4.10. Don't apply any of the available iTunes and QuickTime updates available as they have a whole set of undesirable characteristics we don't need to introduce to the system.

Yes I do think it's an AMS problem. If you check the "help" tab from AMS you will see anytime you plug a MIDI device into either a usb or firewire port it should be automatically detected in AMS or show-up when you rescan, this leads me to believe there's something not quite right with the OS and AMS.

What I (vaguely) meant by configured was if it had a fw400 and fw800 port (I have a 24" iMac and that's how they're built), what port did you have the PM I/O connected to, in your case it doesn't matter. But it's good to know the general configuration, I would recommend upgrading the memory when you get a chance (I just bought a 2GB single for a bargain from Crucial)... but, let's get this problem fixed first.
