Hi Jack, I see you have 3 Operating system versions.
3 places (partitions) to have 3 versions of Pro Tools.

I agree access to the variations of most software should be available.
Especially during transitional times.
However. Backups and clones and not the primary-boot drive should be the proper testing place of anything new.

My view is Yes, the same mac, no to the same boot drive. Lastly your Hardware-Mac should determine the optimal-Operation System.
(10 and 11 of OS 10.8.5 seems a solid combination)
OS 10.10.x and PT's V11 only or V12 only.
(HD or Regular)

Avid has made sure we are all a bit edgy in rumor and knowledge.
Lets stay constructive.

(.....Back to my mix......)
I have the three partitions so I could try different OSX verions, not so I could run different PT versions. Machine originally came with ML and I wanted to try Mavericks because the Apogee Ensemble I want to get is Mavericks minimum. I have Yosemite to see what all the fuss is about and I have to say Yosemite is an out and out dog instability-wise when running PT. The optimal combo of operating system/hardware is not really driven solely by that but also what works with the software one wants to use. Yosemite by itself is stable as all get out but when using PT it's like the line from Forrest Gump: 'Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get' Substitute PT for the word 'life' and that's been my experience with Yosemite. ML and Mavericks have been rock solid no matter what I throw them.

I'm actually thinking of dumping the Yosemite portion as everything else I use or am going to use in the future (Digital Performer), does not require it.

Wasn't talking to you but whatever. Whether I want to hang around the PT12 forum or not is up to me to decide - not you or anyone else. You don't like me - fine - block me.

Ok, so I thought it might be worth refreshing the conversation …..

Did anyone get any further with co-installing 11 and 12? If so, is it ok? I remember reading in another thread about someone renaming the PT11 app so it doesn't get overwritten, but it then others queried whether the two versions share prefs files etc. Is there any definitive info on this that someone can point me to?

Also, I do have a legitimate reason for wanting them co-installed. It is something that will only affect a few people I guess, but it is nevertheless, IMO, legitimate usage. I know the backstop is to have them on separate partitions, but I shouldn't need to reboot to another partition every time I want to switch PT software versions.

And yes … Logic Pro 9 and X happily live together, as do Cubase 7.5 and 8, as do Wavelab 8 and 8.5 etc etc.

Anyway my reason for wanting both on one partition, permanently, once I've finished testing 12 and am happy to put it on my main partition is this ….

I have PT11HD, which I am not upgrading, I will leave it at version 11 (currently 11.3.1, but there may be more updates in the future). I'm not signing up to a HD support plan, I've decided enough is enough so far as handing money over to Avid is concerned.

I also have two student licences with free upgrades to PT12, which I won't be upgrading past the end of their four years of free upgrades period (one in 2016 and the other in 2017). I intend to put one of those licences onto my main iLok, which will then have a PT10+11 HD licence bundle, and a PT10+11+12 licence bundle.

And so I can see that I may well use both 11 and 12 on a regular basis as a standard (for me) workflow). If the stories about stability improvements and better VI performance prove to be true for me, then I will want to use PT12 for tracking and VI use. I'd then want to open the project in 11HD, to take advantage of multi-stem bouncing and for mixing (VCAs, automation modes, disc cache, extended metering, etc. etc.)

Comments please, from anyone with experience of co-installing 11 and 12.

I renamed version 11 to "Pro Tools 11" and installed version 12.
Works without any problems.

This way to do this was also confirmed by Avid support.

Another reason to update to version 12: The support respond from Avid is instant, and I use it from what it's worth
