Default DAE error -9031 was encountered

I've been getting this every now and again.

"DAE error -9031 was encountered"

I did a google search and found this on the DUC from DigiTechSup

"The 9031 error is usually related to having illegal characters in the drive, file or folder name - is that possibly the case here (keep in mind that previously fudged illegal character acceptance is no longer possible, so what may have 'worked' before no longer will)?"

What is he referring to?

My audio path is as follows:
MacPro/Audio1/Protools Sessions/commercials/CLIENT/CLIENT_5O/CLIENT_5O_DAv01/Audio Files

Am I doing something wrong?

The drive "Audio1" is an internal SATA 7200RPM 1TB Seagate drive separate from my boot drive.

Thanks!

You should do a search on the DUC - you will be surprised......

Thanks GS-DK.

I did another search, this time with the DUC search tool but I only found one of the four links relevant. This was the same post I quoted from earlier.

I dove a bit deeper into the 3 pages and found this, again from DigiTechSup:

"Your Pro Tools Reference Guide has a list of unsupported characters. You should make sure that no drive, folder or file name contains any of those characters. "

Is he saying that I cannot have an "unsupported character" ANYWHERE on my hard drive? Or just in my audio path, disk name, PT session name corresponding name, audio files and folders?

Here is what the Pro Tools Reference Guide reads...

Pro Tools 7.x and higher does not support audio file names that contain the following ASCII characters:
/ (Forward Slash)
\ (Backslash)
: (Colon) * (Asterisk)
? (Question mark)
“ (Quotation marks)
< (Less-than symbol) >
(Greater-than symbol)
| (vertical line or pipe)
Any “high order” ASCII character (created with a key combination)

Thanks again!

Nothing in the file path(drive/partition/folder/name) can have illegal characters and you have 2, underscore and forward slash _ & /

I think underscore is ok. And I also think the '/' in the OP was his path description in Finder, not the actual naming scheme.

Over here today it's work drive -> sessions -> client_name -> session-1

Underscores abound. No -9031's. (watch me get one today for posting this, haha).

Sean, I'm on the same page as you. / was just to show separate file paths, I don't use forward OR backslash in my filenames.

I haven't read anywhere that _ is not ok.

This error was so intrusive yesterday that I had to force quite PT. I restarted my 96io and then tried to relaunch PT. Completely HUNG my computer. Had to hard restart... always scared to do that!

I'm at a loss.

Could be related to the drive format. Did this drive come from an older non Intel Mac computer by any chance?

Pro Tools on PPC Macs don't like GUID drives and vice versa, Intel Macs don't always like non GUID drives.

If you copy this session to the desktop (Snow Leopard Boot drive), can you play/record from there?

This is a relatively new drive. Purchased for my MacPro and GUID formatted.

Yes, I am able to play/record in this session when copied to the boot drive.

I also tried running off of "audioBU" which is my backup drive... same issue.

I just found out however that my partner upgraded the OS to 10.6.3!! I am aware that this is not officially supported and could very well be the issue. Is there an easy way to go back to 10.6.2?

Thanks!

I think I can say with a reasonable amount of confidence that these DAE errors are NOT related to illegal characters and they're definitely not related to 10.6.3. In your search did you read all of this thread:

http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=264102

We had to go back to 8.0.1cs1 because of these errors. We suffered them particularly badly on one album, and I searched the HDs thoroughly for all the illegal characters listed in the manual. There's a couple on the system drive (there's actually some used in the file names of a few apple loops - I wonder if digi are aware of that?) but none on our audio drives. We're on 10.5.8 so it's not a SL thing.

There's something seriously wrong with 8.0.3 IMHO. Since going back I've found the system to be much more stable in general, and I haven't seen any -9031s. Of course you don't really have that option if you're on SL. You'll just have to wait til they get around to fixing this terrible bug.
