2018.7 better than 12.8.3 on a mac?

Thinking about upgrading from 12.8.3 to 2018.7 on my 2012 MacBook pro
I7 quad 2.7 16 gigs ram on Mac OS sierra 10.12.6...

Did you notice a performance boost when going to 2018.7 ?
Have you found that most of the plugins are compatible?

Id like to keep 12.8.3 on the same machine
Do I need to rename 12.8.3 to something else to keep it from being upgraded?
