Default The shift from 7.3 to 7.4 (in 10.4/Tiger)?

Hey there

I am still waiting for Native Instruments to get their act together with OSX 10.5/Leopard (about half of their product line is still not updated for 10.5).

But I'm thinking it might be nice to at least update from 7.3 to 7.4 and try out this elastic time feature, and in the process get my free upgrade to 8, whenever that comes out. (And is bug-free. What can I say, I'm cautious.)

I am happily running LE 7.3cs1 with OSX 10.4.9.

Two questions -

* do project files from 7.3 open with no problems (with routing, plug-ins, automation, etc.) in 7.4?

* does the latest version of 7.4 for 10.4/Tiger (i believe it's 7.4cs7?) work well with 10.4.9?

thanks!
b

(PS I tried searching the database for discussions about this - couldn't find any?)

I'd stay where you are. All versions of 7.4 have several bugs that have yet to be fixed by Digidesign (Waveform overviews, MIDI timing, AIFF bouncing, among others...). If I weren't forced into buying a Mac Pro with Leopard when my G5 died I'll still be using 7.3.1, it's far more stable than anything they've released since.

really? even 7.4.2 (and 10.5)? that's a shame - its been almost a year since 7.4 was introduced!

i'm somewhat new to pro tools (converted in order to interface with the larger world more easily)...

does digidesign generally take a long time to get things bug free with new versions?

This is the first time I've ever seen Digi let such major bugs go for so long. My guess would be they got overwhelmed with needing to get a 10.5 version out the door while also working on their new PT8 baby, they probably weren't expecting to have so many major glitches in 7.4 to have to tackle, and thus they got put on the back burner. Supposedly these bugs are "fixed" in PT8 (so says Digi, and who knows what new bugs will arise) but when they'll be releasing patches to address them in 7.4 and 7.4.2 is yet to be seen, although they have said they plan to do so.

well, just to chime in on the other side, running 7.4cs7 on 10.4.11 and don't remember something this stable since the early 5's.
so good, in fact, we haven't upped to leopard cuz why mess with success when it doesn't offer us anything new or better in terms of our workflow.
elastic, on the other hand, is huge.
not since we started doing drum replacement 20 years ago, or the first time being able to use vocal tuning has a program so drastically altered the way we work; and in so many ways...
whether you're trying to change a vocalist phrasing, or lock a bass to a kik, or tighten some palm muting, or my favorite; taking a track not recorded to a clic and conforming it so it's money, i really can't imagine ever having worked without it.
i respect the fact that some people still have issues, i'm only sayin, in our day to day work with bands it's been solid for us.
and the workflow has increased so logarithmically you should at least explore partitioning a drive to try it yourself.
b.o.l.

hmm, so out of curiosity, if anyone else is reading this with experience using 7.4 with 10.4.x, i'd love to hear if you have had problems or not...

thanks!

I have 7.4cs7 and 10.4.9 - and like elicious I say it is the most stable PT system I have ever used. No crashes, SWODs. 7.3.1 last cs was also very good, only rare hickups.
I have an intermittent relink problem (supposedly with 7.4) though, which I haven't investigated.

Note to Digidesign:
Some of us just don't have the time, energy and/or cash to run out and buy the latest whatever.
Some of us are very happy with the system we have.
So please: if something needs to be fixed in 7.4, do it soon.

Thanks.
