TRAVAN Tape Backup - compress audio backup or not ?
Hi everyone,
I just got SEAGATE USB Tape Backup ($350.00). It works with 20/10gig TRAVAN cartridges. I can pack in 20gig of audio files using data compression or 10gig without data compression. Can somebody give me a clear answer (prefferably having hands-on experience with such a device) - Can I use data compression for storing audio files or not? Did you ever compare compressed and uncompressed files after restoring them? Do you compress when storing audio data on TRAVANs? Hope it will help others with tape devices today or in a future... Thanks guys! -Russo- |

Re: TRAVAN Tape Backup - compress audio backup or not ?
Russo,
Never used the Travan, but was always told by several reliable sources to stay away from compressing files for back-up. Never did ask why, but suspect some of the data could get lost on de-compression. Hope this helps. Peace |

Re: TRAVAN Tape Backup - compress audio backup or not ?
Audio files won't compress... As I understand it, data compression is based on series or patterns in files. Since audio files are constantly variable, or have no constant pattern (ones, or zeros) a compression algorythm has no way to work.
Even "silence" in the audio file is really recording low level stuff. So, if you did decide to compress, you'd find that the end result wouldn't be much different than what you started with. It might compress some of the fade files or EDLs, but not enough to mess with. So the short answer is no, don't compress. It's not worth it.
