PT2018.4 with X-Touch and Dock

Hi everyone,

I work in film and TV as a sound recodist and production mixer. Recently I’ve been moving a little into the post side of things for a bit of fun.

I’ve just finished doing the sound design and mix for one film and I definatly need to get sorted for a control surface because everything took forever to do with mouse and keyboard (the only thing I have is a Softube Console 1).

I’m set on getting an Avid Dock and am planning on going to an S3 in the next few years or so. In the mean time I’m looking for an inexpensive set of faders (to go with the Avid Dock). I’m thinking of the Behringer X-touch extender as it is literally just faders/pan pot and mute/solo/select. So I have 2 questions;

1) I know that the X-touch is known for not having many features working. I however only only need faders (for animation), mute, solo, select, pan and ideally for the scrible strips to work (with the colours matching the track colours in PT - I colour code dialogue/SFX/atmos/music etc). Will the X-touch extender work for this?

2) There is no bank selector for choosing what tracks are being controlled. How will this work with selecting tracks for the extender to control?

Go ARtist Mix. That way it works with your Dock (VCA spills for instance and pulling things (select) to Dock focus)

There are a ton on the used market and right now, Stateside (don't know if globally) they are discounted new.

I'm aware that the mix is the option that has deep compatibility. Id still like some advice though on the xtouch extender though. In the UK you still end up paying 700GBP for a used artist mix after import duties. This is still well over double the price for an xtouch extender

Have you used a HUI device with Pro Tools before (excluding the Dock for a second)?

There is nothing in the HUI protocol for color so that isn't going to be communicated.

As for bank select, you'll see a bank on screen on your fader selects (outlined in a gang of 8). You can click down to move the selection. Not real useful if you plan to keep your hands on the mixer (and the Dock functions won't control where HUI is whereas it can control where other Eucon devices are). Obviously the extender module is meant to be used with the main unit which does have bank/track select/nudge. But it is workable without it if you count on mousing to move the bank of eight.
