I can remember when the community spirit started fading away and some of the posts above sum it up. When the Mbox started attracting a different type of customer, that's when things started changing. They weren't engineers or folks who had grown up around the recording business. I'm not trying to diss anyone, but they seemed more like they were kids who were expecting to make great recordings now now now and wanted everything to be plug and play. The rest of us already understood that it requires work and skills. A lot of folks jumped ship then.

I have to say though that after 12+ years, some of the guys I met on the old DUC are still great friends to this day, although we don't congregate here anymore. When I first joined the DUC, and needed help, man you got it enthusiastically. That eventually led to long term friendships and collaborations.
I recently upgraded my system after many years, I came back here naturally for help since so many things had changed. It was so different in attitude - not mean spirited at all, but just less friendly and little harder to get advice. Thankfully a few of the old timers were still around and got me up and running. But still there isn't that big we're-all-in-it-together spirit that made the DUC such a great site.
Not sure if the old days were just a convergence of certain individuals that gave it that quality... I am sure that had something to do with it.

I do think that this new mod program is a positive move, and I'll be interested in seeing it work for the best.

The overall tone of the net in general started to change with the rise of the YouTube/facebook/twtter/4chan era circa '05-'06. Unfortunately with the "anything goes" type of commenting on such giants like YouTube, this modus operandi seemed to be adopted as the norm in every other forum.

Careful. You got me launching Photoshop now... You might get the first Hobo infraction for the Hobo behaviour.

I've been posting to internet forums since 1987 and can remember when we were overrun with AOL users! It only takes a few people to make a great deal of negative noise. The thing about negativity is that it is self-directed and self-focused. A positive attitude looks outward and is very diffuse because it recognizes the many possibilities in life.

As the traffic increases the tone always appears to become more negative. It's really no different than the world famous people live in. We each have maybe 1000 people in our life with two or three that are a huge PITA. A star has millions of people in theirs and the very same percentage of PITAs becomes a large enough quantity that they often need bodyguards.

That's when I log'ed off.

I was minimally checking over here for bug alerts but that's it.

I just gradually came back in the last couple years.

I think GS is the place that really turned me off the whole board thing, although it had been great the first couple years.

Cheers ! :)
