Drum machine won't trigger

I'm running mac 10.4 with PT 6.9LE

I'm new to midi...

I've got an Alesis SR16 hooked into my computer and I'm able to get midi recorded onto a midi track.

But when I play back....nothing!!! Shouldn't this trigger the drum machine sounds? I have the SR16 slaved and it begins playing when I hit play on PT, but no sounds.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have audio cables connecting the SR to your protools interface?

Yes, I also have the audio cables hooked to the mbox. I am able to set up a midi and audio track and hit record on both tracks and see midi/waveforms recording.

When I play back just the midi I get nothing.

Check the Rx channel in your SR16... it's probably set to channel 10

From the manual's troubleshooting section:


SR-16 not receiving MIDI notes.

SR-16 "Drum In" turned off. - Turn it on.
Incorrect MIDI channel. - Set channel accordingly.
Incorrect drum note assignments. - Set drum notes accordingly


I have an SR-16, but I absolutely despise it so I have only ever connected it to ProTools once or twice (so I know it is possible). If you continue to have problems I might dig it out and see what the deal is... but I really hope you can get it to work so I don't have to.

You should take a look at the manual if you don't have it.. Do a google search for "alesis sr 16 user manual" and about 2-3 links down will be a pdf from zzounds

I have the manual and followed the directions. it wasn't clear on what channel to set it to....

I have it set to DRUM IN - OMNI
DRUM OUT - CH1

All I see on the midi track is the notes that have little X's on them.

Well I am another step closer...I was able to get the midi to make the drum machine fire finally. DRUM OUT was set to OFF somehow...not sure how I missed that!!
Anyway...now it records and plays back!

Next problem...everytime I hit play on PT it starts the drum machine up...so I have to hit STOP on the drum machine, then continue listening to the midi send the triggers. Where is the setting that stops controlling the drum machine??!!
