Default playback selection

this is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but if I have my m-audio m-track selected as my playback engine does that mean I cant hear what I'm recording without my headphones plugged into the m-track? I'm in pro tools 12

If you are on Windows, then its a "yes". If on a Mac, set up aggregate IO(watch youtube for help on that).
