Default Pro Tools 10.3 installation question

Hello,
I have just downloaded and installed Pro Tools 10.3. When attempting to launch it, I receive the following message:

"Error, missing iLok authorization for "Pro Tools 10". Please insert the necessary iLok and restart Pro Tools."

Is the iLok the only thing I need to be able to enable the software? I haven't paid for anything yet, and it appears that a 2nd generation iLok costs $45. It doesn't make sense that I could obtain a fully functioning Pro Tools 10.3 for only $45, so what am I missing?

Thanks very much!

Hi,

First you must purchase Pro Tools. Either from the Avid store or an Avid retailer!

Or you can use the free version for beginners Avid First.... http://www.avid.com/protoolsfirstactivation

All versions of pro tools come with a registration code, you create an Avid account and register your product using the purchase code. Then an ilok auth is deposited into your ilok account (you must create an Ilok account at www.ilok.com) then you download the authorisation onto your USB ilok key (cost around $45 for the 2nd gen ilok key)

Thanks for the reply.
What I was wondering if it was possible to pay for a registration code (i.e. "purchase" Pro Tools) for the version that I just downloadad (10.3). I want this version since I am running Lion, and do not wish to upgrade my OS to make it compatible with Pro Tools 12. I couldn't find a way to directly purchase version 10.3 on the Avid site.

Regarding iLok... it is really necessary to have this drive plugged into my laptap every time I run Pro Tools?

Thanks again!
- Paul

If you buy a PT12 license, you will be able to run 10. Keep in mind, this is not true if you simply subscribe.

yes, the iLok needs to remain plugged in at all times PT is running.
