Default LEQ(a) metering, no more phase scope....

Hey all,

I've seen a few threads kicking this around, one on the Windows board here. But, I haven't seen much chatter lately and wondered about this.

I know Avid inexplicably pulled phase scope from the basic plug-in package, which was really short-sighted. But, I'm wondering what replacements you all are using?

In particular, I've found phase scope LEQ(a) metering invaluable for helping me peg DIA levels right at the number where I need them during the mix process.
(2 second window.) I later run DMM on projects but during the mix stage I loved the LEQs.

I've looked at a few other metering options and can't really find a good match to replace it, but then again I'm admittedly on the lesser educated side with regards to loudness metering. I just know what my specs for delivery are and using my own system have always managed to get there.

So, I'm interested now that 11 has been out a bit if people have found LEQ replacements and any LKFS 1770 metering options as well, preferably something that wouldn't break the bank?

Thanks for any input in advance.

I should mention I'm on Mavericks, PT 11.03. So looking for AAX solutions.

I use the iZotope Insight that I got when I upgraded to RX3 advanced.

I also have insight with PT 11 (but I have not used it much yet, but it looks good).

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I'm going to be getting the Waves bcast bundle which contains WLM... which appears to have LEQ options.

I wish VSonics would hurry up and go AAX.

Oh well, thanks for the input!

Personally, there isn't anything in the Waves Broadcast bundle I would use. Take a look at the Nugen Meter, it is PT 11 AAX ready. Their meters are great. So is Insight. I got Insight with the upgrade to RX3 Advanced.

Thanks Tom. I had a cheap upgrade to the waves package so the WLM came with it. It seems fairly straight forward. Is there something you don't like about it in particular? Do you have info that it's not accurate?

What I mean is that for every plugin in the Waves Bundle, I personally think there are better sounding alternatives. As to the meter, which was the point of your post, I am sure theirs is accurate. If you got a great deal on an upgrade which in the end is cheaper than buying a meter outright, then you are all set. However, I think the Nugen and Insight provide better graphs, more information, including history. But I wouldn't say that the number reading will be more accurate. Make sure it has 1770.3.

I think WLM might only be 1770-2 but I will double check.

And yeah... it was a couple hundred for the upgrade and for the meters and the multiband and linear EQ that was a no brainer. I agree I'm not huge on the other plugs.

Though curious what you like for track dynamics?
I use the old D2 for bcast stuff usually and it still sounds transparent to me.

For track dynamics first thing is fader riding.

Then I use the DMG Audio's Compassion -- finally a plugin that sounds as good as a good hardware compressor and doesn't make things sound mushy™. It also embiggens™ the sound in a way I like. Things just sound better through it, which is the test for me with Analog gear and plugins. Most plugin dynamics don't work that well.

I also like the Massey CT5, it sounds better than the CT4. The CT4 was good, but not great. It was was a little grabby™ and rubbery™ and a little dirty™. Things sounded a little worse through it. The CT5 is reasonably transparent and does a nice job of taming volume excursions without you "hearing it work".

The limiter I am using now is the FabFilter Pro-L. I am not convinced yet that 4X Oversampling is transparent (things sound a tad brighter with it), but mostly I think it is a great limiter.
