Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
Hi All
Just took delivery of a new pro tools HDX system, and amongst other changes in the studio, Im looking to buy a 42 inch TV as a mixing monitor. It will be fed HDMI from a Blackmagic card in a Mac Pro. Im looking for any thoughts others might have regarding 1) What sort of screen delays are reputable brands creating these days. (ie not low end budget products) They used to be terrible, but have improved no end in the last 10-15 years Im sure. 2) Are there any advantages to go for higher hz values in this delays regard. 3) Does pro Tools 10 (and 11 when its out) still allow some adjustemnt in offset for video feeds? Any additional thoughts much appreciated Many thanks Peter |

Re: Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
I have a Panasonic Viera that I'd highly recommend.
I run it from a Blackmagic Studio card. It does 24p which was a must for me and has THX picture calibration built in, which makes for a very representative picture for the clients, especially in HD. The delay is quite high, but fine when compensated in PT. A syncheck is pretty much a must with these kind of setups though, especially when using different codecs for picture which slightly change delay times. So I'd factor in that extra expense too if I were you. I bought it some time ago so there may be better out there now. Hope that helps. |

Re: Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
I have installed several Panasonic Professional Plasma monitors (42s and 50s) in places I have worked in the past. In all of them I would add the HD-SDI option.
Pro Tools 10 does still have an option for Video Delay compensation. I would be surprised if they took it out for Pro Tools 11. The a higher refresh rate will not affect the latency of the monitor, but should help reduce motion artifacts. Randall |

Re: Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
If you are going the plasma route, just be wary of screen burn. The technology has gotten a lot better these days, but if you are using video with timecode burn-in on the screen keep in mind that you might get perma-ghost images if you aren't careful. Anti-retention settings like pixel orbiters can help too, but still you've got to be careful, especially within the first 100 hours of use.

Re: Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
Recently bought this Sony 42" display that's fed from our Blackmagic Extreme via HDMI.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...2_Full_HD.html We're exrtemely happy with it. Didn't want to go plasma (too much heat in our space). Wanted LED. (although this is a hybrid LED/LCD) Highly reccomend this one. |

Definitely check the specs for supported frame rates. Our (older) Bravias don't support 24fps at the HDMI input.

Re: Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
Regarding LCD vs LED, how close is the screen to your face? If less than 5', I would go LCD as LED is really tough on the eyes. I had a Panasonic LCD 32"(1080P) and thought it was great(about 3' from my face). Getting greedy for a larger screen, I bought a 39" Samsung and regretted it big time. Now I am back to another 32"(LED) and while its better, the LCD is sorely missed. Spent 3 days fussing with settings on the TV and in the graphics software and never got the 39" to NOT be nasty on the eyes.

Re: Need to buy a new TV for mixing / client
Re: LCD vs LED; I have LCD TVs at home and they look fine, but I read that the new LED TVs would be greatly superior, so when my (beautiful) Plasma started misbehaving we replaced it with a Samsung LED. After a great deal of fiddling and adjusting, (as well as one early trip to the shop to have a backlight replaced) I have finally been able to make the picture look not too terrible, but it does have a way of making film look like video. Wouldn't recommend LED based on my experience, others may disagree.
