Default +12db/+6db

Just curious...when you open an old session and you get the dialog box that asks if you want to keep it at +6db, being somewhat afraid to fix what ain't broke, I generally leave it at 6. Is there any advantage to opening it at +12?

Not unless you need +12 gain on a channel!

Is there any advantate in using 12db fader gain over just inserting a trim plugin,(other than the small amount of dsp trim uses)?

If you need automation the main fader is much more accurate timing wise than moves on a trim plug-in. Also you wouldn't lose a plug-in slot, and unless the trim plug-in was last in the plug-in chain you could end up changing gain in front of compressors, etc.

Hey Steve,

I wish the automation on the trims was sample accurate like on the faders.
It's becoming more and more common to copy the editor's volume graphing to trims and then blowing out the fader automation for film mixing on an Icon and starting with the faders @ 0 and using them to trim the editor's moves (especially for temp dubs).
You end up having to move the trim gain automation breakpoints a frame or so earlier to give it time to get there in time.

Hi Joe,

I always thought it would be a good idea for Digi to have several additive volume graphs per fader. Then you could have rides that the editor did on one layer and have the mixer's rides on another, and then the actual gain would be a composite of both. I often do surgical rides carefully trimming the breakpoint line to even out the bumps and lumps, but then on top of that you need the perspective of realtime hand rides within the track. It would be great to keep those seperate without having to buss to an aux or copy to the trim plug-in. Then when you liked everything you could merge the automation. Of course sample accurate plug-in automation is badly needed. Not only for trim plug-ins, but for automated eq as well.
