Ive just got Pro tools 9. Ive installed it, done the ilok license etc etc, but when i run the software I get a message
"Unable to locate hardware, click when your hardware is ready."
Ok does nothing (as there is no pt hardware and cancel quits the program.)

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

Try installing ASIO4ALL. You must have something to act as the "audio engine"(which basically means ins and outs). To use the computer's own sound ports(or any non-Avid/Digi hardware) you need a working ASIO driver. ASIO4ALL is a freebie that CAN work with almost anything. If you want to get serious about recording(whether Pro tools or some other DAW program) you will eventually need a real interface. On a budget, I would look at used 3rd generation Mboxes, Focusrite and Presonus. From personal experience, I can't recommend the M-Audio stuff(which was just sold off to the company that sells Akai and Alesis).
