fragmentation

ok my audio drive has become excessively fragmented and it's a 1Tb drive.

I tried using western digital's data lifeguard tools to do a drive copy to another 1tb drive (unfortunately it's a usb drive)

I let it run overnight it took forever and hung in the middle of the xfer.

I successfully backed up my sessions folder on a nother internal hard drive.

Are there any reliable defragmenting software out there? Xferring 700gb of crap is time consumibng. How do you guys all deal with this issue?

For Windows: Diskeeper or Tune up utilities defrag

For Mac: iDefrag

Yes. There is nothing wrong with the regular Windows Defragging utility. I use it all the time. The biggest thing with defragging is making sure you have a UPS (Uninterpretable Power Supply) Since losing power during a defrag will result in lost data.

Defraggler is a freebie that works as well or better that the paid stuff.

Use the regular windows utility first.

My personal opinion is that any performance gains claimed by the various defragging utilities are snake oil. To the best of my knowlage no third party has ever been able to verify any realworld performance gains over the windows defrag utility. The third party stuff does however add some useful features such as scheduling Defrags, or integrating into a corporate IT department.

ive read over and over not to defrag a pro tools audio drive. I formatted and copied to a new drive without incident.
